Now when i say flukie, i don't mean lucky. Pettis wasn't lucky. He threw that superman hook with bad intentions. His goal was to knock Wonderboy out and he did.

Pettis never displayed danger with his hands and Wonderboy's chin held up vs dangerous punchers. Wonderboy faced better strikers than Pettis and absolutely schooled them. Pettis is more out of his prime than Wonderboy. This is the epitome of a fluke victory.

Now lot of people are saying “Wonderboy is figured out” and “just throw leg kicks like Pettis.”

Masvidal tried to kick the shit out of Wonderboys leg but got outclassed. Luque landed twice as many leg kicks as Pettis. The man kicks hard as fuck. He pressured, cut off the octagon, and tried to counter Thompson’s lateral movement with hooks. While Luque enjoyed some success, Wonderboy made his reads and busted him up.

If Neal beats Wonderboy tonight, i will be very very impressed.

a LW knocked his ass out, don't down play pettis' victory.

Just because a victory is a come back KO does not mean it is fluky .. this isn't junior league amateur boxing where the winner is decided by counting punches. Not the first nor the second time Pettis has hurt people via strikes using the fence as leverage. That shit was practiced in gym.

Wonderboy is not figured out, but Pettis was def the better fighter that night. Hope he does well next.

The top 3 at ww right now all got through by not facing the best striker at ww.. if a striker held the belt without facing the top 3 grapplers in that weight class people would be pissy as fuck...

I could bet he fucked his managers wife.. that is the only reason he fought pettis.. these are all professional fighters.. at some point you'll get cought..

No.

rewatch the fight - he was pressing WB, and put in the work to the legs and body, he took away WB's best weapon (kicks) in exchange for his punches (which he is not as well known for).

Did he take damage? Of course. Was he losing the battle? Yes. Was it a risk? Yes, but calculated; take away your opponents best weapon in exchange for his secondary weapon.

Definitely wasn’t a fluke but I wouldn’t bet on Pettis in a rematch.
No fucking win or lose is a fluke or luck. Stop with those words.
Hey anything can happen when you throw bones at eachother in just your underwear. Flukes can easily happen.

Given Wonderboy and Pettis history before they fought, and AFTER they fought, i struggle to find a better example of a fluke victory. Serra/GSP comes to mind.

I don't believe in luck in this game. Only if a fight ends up like Kape/Mcall or Couture/Belfort 2 or some shit like that.

I think you said it best. This fight had me sort of questioning Wonderboy's chin but he took some big shots from Luque with basically no issue.

Flukey is a controversial word, but I can’t think of another fight in which the loser of the fight would actually have better betting odds in the rematch than he did in the first fight.

It is a controversial word. A misunderstood word imo. Fluke and luck are different to me.

Serra vs GSP was lower probability. GSP was a low risk fighter who overpowered and held down much bigger and far more dangerous guys than Serra.

So I think that’s still the most improbable outcome of all time.

Pettis was at least a striker who has a history of knock outs, and Wonderboy was also a striker who had been knocked down a fair bit and was getting older. When a good striker finds one good shot in 25 minutes that’s not as shocking as an undersized guy without any power to speak of finding a KO in a fight that was probably gonna spend about 90 seconds total standing.

Not a fluke , but Pettis was outmatched in this fight except for the superman punch.

No. Pettis is creative and awkward and after seeing the showtime kick on benson early in his career he’ll creates an environment for pulling off chaotic moves.

Also, one thing that the Wonderboy vs Tyron fights displayed is that Wonderboy has no plan B. Either he’s “allowed” to fight his fight and look dominant or he’ll just go the whole 3/5 rounds and cruise to a loss (same thing can be said for Tyron). Pettis isn’t the type of fighter to let you cruise to a loss. If he thinks he can look good getting you outta there he’ll chase a highlight reel move to do it.

How the fuck has Colby and Usman not fought this dude yet? That’s suspect

There is no game in all of life that doesn’t involve luck. Events have probabilities of occurring, and when a low probability event occurs and it favors you, that’s good luck.

It’s not improbable that Pettis would have a come from behind KO at some point in his career.....he’s tried to do that a bunch of times. But it is improbable that it would happen in any one specific fight, especially a division above where he usually fights against a guy who had never been knocked out (and was completely dominating him).

He got lucky, let's be honest, but he is a good striker himself, and this is mma after all, and unpredictable things happen all the time. Stephen got caught with a crazy shot...just facts.

Superman punch getting through his defense makes a lot of sense.

Wonderboy wasn't fast enough moving back and he got caught.
