Lots of these champions sign stupid long term contracts.

They need better managers! It just shocks me that no UFC champion of late has thought I'm so good I'll fight out the last fight of my contract and test Free agency as champion.

They always get suckered in to signing long term contracts. bet on yourself!!! 1-3 fight contracts at most! test free agency every year and a half at least

Betting on yourself with a short term contract, is just that: A bet. It could pay off immensely, or it could fail. We see this in every sport. You have to weigh the security that comes with a long-term contract against the risk/reward of a shorter contract that could really pay off if you perform. In a sport as risky as MMA, I understand the appeal of signing a longer term contract and locking down that financial security when you're on top, as a serious injury/bad loss could happen at any moment and knock you off the top of the mountain fast. There are lots of cases of fighters still getting paid a lot as they signed the contract when they were top contenders which is no longer the case. It's all about weighing the risk and reward.

Champions' contracts get automatically extended.

Non-champions get fucked over via bad matchups and short-notice fights if the UFC thinks they want to leave.

UFC contracts are written in such a way that when you're champion and you win, your contract automatically gets extended.

ya, I'd vacant the belt asap after winning it!

keep fighting guys in the top 10 and be the uncrowned champion

Then I'd vacant the belt a couple fights before my contract ran up. It's just a championship clause.

Giving up the belt and running the risk of losing as a non-champion isn't the most prudent way to market yourself or make more money. Uncle Goof will also terrorize you for the rest of your UFC tenure if you try something like that. You'd be 45 before you get out.

gotta bet yourself and put in the work at some point. if you want to get paid, you gotta do something.

idk man I knew Jon Jones was a problem ever since he beat gusmao. The size, the youth, the wrestling, the length. He was suppose to lose that fight and he just tossed him around. That's a guy who should have bet on himself.

Same w Khabib. Same w Conor bc win or lose he's still a draw.

gotta bet on yourself. And tbh if you're good enough youre good enough. Bellator and one pays too. You don't have to only rely on the ufc

More guys need to bet on themselves.

Exactly. If you vacate a couple of fights before, they'll MAKE SURE you get VERY unfavorable matchups to drive your market value down. When you try to leave and get paid, Bellator, PFL say, "sorry, you're last couple of fights looked bad, so now we can only pay you $XX instead of the $XXX we were willing to pay when you were undefeated or held the UFC belt."

When i say betting on myself, I mean the guys who are the best. come on now....we've known Khabib, Jon Jones, even guys like GSP have been the best forever.

And Conor is another guy. it doesn't matter if conor wins or loses he's still a big draw.

At some point they should have bet on themselves.

Dear god... every fighter know that the next fight might be their last, and that this is mma, and it is easy to get caught. Earn as much as you can while you can. You earn much more as champ, and most have very short time at the top.

Overeem comes to mind. Still a solid performer and I know heavies get paid a bit more in general, but man he is bringing in title fight money no matter where he is on the card. (glad for him. maybe he can actually retire one day).

please, I've known Jon Jones was a monster since he was tossing Gusmao around. The size, length, wrestling. He had it all.

Khabib, I've thought was a monster for years and years and years and years. Win or lose, Conor is a big draw.
