Fans may have seen the last of former UFC heavyweight champ Junior dos Santos after a loss at UFC 256, according to UFC President Dana White.

White agreed that dos Santos needs to think about his future in fighting when asked about the ex-champ’s fourth straight knockout loss, which came against Ciryl Gane in the pay-per-view opener of Saturday.

Asked later if fans may have seen the last of dos Santos in the octagon, White said “possibly.”

Dos Santos brushed aside talk of retirement before his bout with Gane, an up-and-comer who came into the bout undefeated after six pro bouts with finishes in five of them. After a competitive opening round, Gane began to push ahead as he landed leg kicks at will and started to land more punches.

Then, a jab appeared to badly hurt dos Santos, who turned away as Gane surged forward and threw an elbow that caught him across the back of the head. Although UFC commentators quickly questioned whether the strike was legal, dos Santos’ efforts to move away and part of Gane’s arm touching dos Santos’ ear made it fair.

White said he had no issue with the stoppage, which was protested by dos Santos after the referee waved it off at the 2:40 mark of the second round.

“You guys tell me what you think, but what I saw was Junior had gotten hurt,” White said. “He got rocked, and he was almost walking away and turning his back to him, and Ciryl was throwing shots at him and then threw an elbow. They were squared up. You turned your back, and then he caught you on the back of the head.”

Once the best heavyweight in the UFC, dos Santos took a tremendous amount of damage in a pair of losses to now ex-champ Cain Velasquez, from whom he captured the title in 2011. He remained competitive in his next seven bouts, going 5-2. But a quick knockout loss to Francis Ngannou set in motion a slide that continued on Saturday.

At 36, dos Santos stands at 15-8 in the octagon.

Nobody wants to see JDS take any more beatings. He lives in the US but I'm sure Dana could hook him up with a commentary / hosting gig with UFC Brazil, I think Werdum had a role like that.

I honestly think he can be a lot more competitive than he has shown.

His chin is obviously compromised but I think he has a lot of mental problems that are fucking him up.

1. His willingness to engage is almost gone. When he engages he doesn't trust himself so he just leaps in with a big shot every once in a while.

2. He reacts horribly to getting punched. It's almost like he gets punched and he starts panicking "OH shit I'mma bout to get KO'd again!!"

Early round TKO losses in his last 4 fights speaks for it self.

Thanks for your service JDS, you don´t need CTE.

always love JDS but dont turn away if you dont wanna get elbowed in/near the back of the head. gane is legit, nice to see a HW whos in shape and very technical. that elbow was landing either way, probably wouldve still put JDS down if it landed on the temple or chin.

Agree. You always know when he's about to get finish by watching him back up against the cage. Sad to see.

This isn't a revolutionary take or anything, but JDS has honestly looked awful since the second Cain fight. He's talented enough to have picked up a few big wins since then, but even in those fights he didn't move the same, react to punches the same, or have the same confidence as he did early in his career.

Personally, I haven't wanted to see him fight since he got embarrassed by Stipe.

In his last 4 fights he fought 3 KO artists and Blaydes who can be a brutal finisher as well.

Let him have a couple of gimme's so he can make some more bucks and have a decent send off. He deserves it as one of the best HW's ever.

Self fulfilling it seems. With the Ngannou fight once he had his back turned he freaked out and didn't properly cover up. Late 2000s era JDS was fearless.

I'm a huge JDS fan, but I wouldn't be so sure about that.

Gane is clearly a much better 'mixed' martial artist than JDS, and even a prime JDS.

Gane didn't even have to try in this victory.
Don’t be retarded, Gane is not a better martial artist. He’s only won 4 fights and past prime washed up JDS is his best win.

Prime JDS would box the living shit out of him, he had a chin, crazy TDD and the best boxing we’ve ever seen in mma.

Who has Gane beat exactly? You really think Gane would beat Cain? You’re reaching hard.
