Looking at the video posted in the "Video of Kamaru Usman wrestling days" thread got me thinking, how would cageless MMA look?

I imagine the art of wall and stall/hug and slug demonstrated by Snoozeman and Huggington would be cut down drastically, if not eliminated complete. That said, we'd also see a lot more breaks as a result of people moving outside the combat area, which could be a new way of stalling match ups.

A part of me would like to see quicker breaks for wall and stall, but it's also hard to justify that without applying that to the ground as well. Lay and pray sucks as well, but at least in those situations, someone had to work for the takedown. Also, someone could be attacking from the bottom and potentially lose that position if breaks on the ground occur too quickly. Cageless MMA could be a way to deal with the wall and stall scenarios without effecting ground game scenarios.

I imagine people will try to stall by throwing opponents out of the combat area for sure, but it might be a bit more transparent as well. Might make that stalling tactic more apparent and could make it easier to apply reprimands for stalling.

Anyways, think it could work? Why or why not?

The cage is part of the allure. The refs could easily end the stalling. Just step in, and break them up. Seeing mma in a ring is just not the same to me.

sounds more like you want to change the rules for breaks rather than eliminate the cage. "cage fighting" is part of the dangerous allure of the sport for a lot of people. yellow cards and red cards like in Pride would seem to be a better solution.

I hear you, but the cage also kinda stems from the "extreme cagefighting" novelty gets more and more dated as the sport grows and gains more acceptance in the mainstream. But yeah, it's very much a interlinked with the UFC brand.

"Welcome to the non-tagon!"

Simply wouldnt work, mma can get pretty wild sometimes and you really do need a cage to keep it contained in a spot.

Think about this from a venue angle. Imagine dudes brawling with no ring/cage and fight spills into the audience. Shit would be a disaster
