They are all 3rd gen fighters, very well rounded fighters who could do it all.
Actually Fedor is the best rounded fighter from that era, he could do everything right, he could take you down, submit you or knock you out. You were always in danger from any angle and any time.
Anderson excelled in striking while lacked a bit of sub defense.
You knew Anderson was gonna knock you out, he wasn't gonna try and take you down, so at least you knew what you should focus on (not that it helped anybody)
GSP excelled at rassling but his striking game was average, so you knew you are not getting knocked out, but are getting taken down and held down. Not gonna go for submissions, but make sure he is on top of you.

Here comes Jones. He is the 4th gen fighter. 4th gens are simply post 3rd gens fighter and simply called mma fighter, we no longer name the generations. Nothing is new or up from the 3rd gen, they just know it all and its up to the team to find a fighter with highest potential to teach him the game, they are just 3rd gens with excellent genes. Jones had excellent rassling and grapling and very unorthodox striking in his prime. All that has been cut down now, he rarely rassles and his striking tools have been greatly reduced. All that has remained now is his constant pressure.

If we look at the fighters that currently dominate these divisions, we will see that instead of GSP there is Kamaru. Kamaru is not well rounded fighter. He is dominant rassler. His striking is bad, submission game missing too. Marty is one dimensional fighter.
Stipe rules instead of Fedor. Stipe is good striker with solid rassling. Submission is missing. Stipe is 2D fighter.
Anderson didn't leave an heir. Several people tried to inherit that thrown with no luck. Now Izzy is on top and ironically, Izzy is like Anderson Silva Lite. He is a great striker, with worse rassling and no submissions. So Izzy is also 1D fighter like Marty. TO be fair to Anderson, Izzy hasn't yet entered the MAtrix and showed us that kind of magic, his striking is behind Anderson's too.

Instead of Jones, we have Jones Old. Jones has cut a lot of weapons from his arsenal, his striking game now is pretty text book, he doesn't do crazy stunts any more. Even journemen can defend that take down so he doesn't even rassle that much any more. He has degraded a lot but is still at the top of the division. So we have a water downed version of Jones still ruling in 2020. Cause he was that good to begin with.

If you look into it, the sport has devolved. Everything is worse now, than it was 10-15 years ago. Fighters no longer reach that high level of technicality and skill fighters once possessed. Fighters tend to have less skill and be dominant in one area, they don't focus to become well rounded and great at everything. Except for Tony Ferguson. He is the last of the old kind. He does everything great, which is also why I expect him to win against Habib.

Don't forget in the lower weight classes the competition has become much better over time where HW and LHW has declined by a mile. Another testament to Fedor's greatness.

The lower weight classes were at all time high at one point, but many legends are gone:
DJ, Cruz, TJ, Cody, Barao, DOdson, Benavidez, Aldo, Edgar, Faber, Chad......so they are on a decline too lately.

@Hirashin
Adesanya has actually solid defensive wrestling - definitely a lot better than Silva at least.
Also: St-Pierre's striking is not average, what are you talking about?

For sure that TDD is greatly improved, but that doesn't mean he has rassling or grappling credentials now. If he gets taken down, I expect to see him dominated on the ground.

And no mention of Anderson’s awful wrestling. Biased thread

Pre broken Toe Jones could submit you from nearly every angle also. That's if he didn't want to elbow you to death.

The thread is somewhat premature. Isn’t it kind of hard to review current champs in the goat talks when we have no concept of how much more of their career is left, and what they’ll accomplish?

It was so bad, he outrassledd the best rassler at the time in Hendo and submitted him. He also demonstrated that he can take the H bomb right on the chin like its nothing.

We are comparing the champs from 10 years ago to the current champs.

Right, which is pointless if you’re only picking the ideal matchups to prove your point. Not to mention the concept as a whole is flawed

How is it flawed when we are comparing how well rounded the champs from 10 years ago are to the modern day ones?

Read my first post

And we are spinning back in circles :)
we should not make any thread until the sport died.
but, we are comparing the champs from 10 years ago to the champ now. simple as dat.

Lol. Explain how he outwrestled him

Anderson’s wrestling is garbage

took him down and choked him out. You should see the fight, it was great. Anderson was a complete fighter at that point.
