Ben Askren has hunch a win over Jorge Masvidal nets a shot at Kamaru Usman

LOS ANGELES – Like many, Ben Askren had the idea in his head that Kamaru Usman’s first UFC welterweight title defense would be against Colby Covington, who is on an six-fight winning streak.

But as the former Bellator and ONE Championship titleholder’s UFC 239 date with Jorge Masvidal approaches, Askren can’t help but notice that it’s getting to be close to the time Usman’s next fight should be announced, and it’s yet to happen.

“I thought it was a foregone conclusion that Colby and Marty [Usman] would be fighting,” Askren told MMA Junkie at Monday’s UFC 239 media day in downtown Los Angeles. “And then a couple weeks ago I thought, ‘Man, we’re only a month out from my fight and they still haven’t announced it – that’s weird.’ And now it’s like we’re two weeks away, and there’s no other really big events on the horizon, there’s no big press conferences. I’m like, ‘Tthey’re not going to announce it.'”

That’s led Askren to believe the UFC is waiting to see how his fight against Masvidal goes on July 6 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas before deciding the next challenger. And Askren (19-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) believes this is his opportunity to swoop in and take a fight that he believes is the one Usman really wants, anyway.

“They’re going to wait and see what happens in my fight, and if my fight goes well, and I cut a mean promo, my fight with Marty makes a whole lot more sense than Colby vs. Marty,” Askren said. “Because Colby is trying the fake MAGA bull(expletive), but there’s no real heat between Colby and Marty. That’s not genuine. Whereas, for some reason, Marty really doesn’t like me. And so I think it would make a lot of sense. So yes, I think they are waiting 12 more days, they want to see what happens, and then they’ll make the call after that.”

Well, yeah.

The UFC always waits to see how things shake out when there are multiple options. It doesn't really matter that Usman's next fight isn't announced because he's out with a major surgery. He also isn't the type of fighter who is going to get a big fight promotion behind his next appearance.

I think so, but given that Usmans out of commission still, I'd like to see Colby get the shot first, and have Ben fight someone else afterwards.

Well... yeah. The winner is pretty much next in line... just needs to handle business in the cage and the fight should be his later in the year...

Too bad Usman has been fighting at 30% for so long that he needs a few years to recover before taking his next fight.

I LOVE how he refers to Usman has nothing but "Marty" every time. He goes out of his way to say it at times lol.

"my fight with Marty makes a whole lot more sense than Colby vs. Marty”

Hes partly right but I'm thinking they are hoping jorge beats him down for the title shot. If Ben wins he will have to fight someone else

Askren already talking on ESPN like he sleeping on Masvidal. Darren Till did the same thing and then Leon Edwards back stage. I wouldn't recommend it.

All 4 are set up

Rob
Colby
Mas
Ben

Whoever wins most impressively will get the shot

Bullshit. In what world does scrapping through a shot Robbie Lawler and a gatekeeper in Masvidal get you a TS? Give Colby what he’s earnt. Or at least have Colby fight the winner.

Usman is another champ who magically needs surgery/time off once he wins the belt.
Defend or Vacate.

I don’t think UFC is hoping a journeyman in his twilight years will beat their prized trade product and most popular, recent attraction Askren. Askren has a NCAA following, good media presence, undefeated, still a lot of time left in his career to make a title run and keep the company profiting. It seems like even the cranky Dana is turning onto Askrens shtick.

That doesn't make sense. Masvidal isn't a particularly interesting title contender, Usman and Askren have genuine beef between them.

I agree. I don't see any other reason they would have matched Colby up with Lawler instead of giving him the shot.

Don't forget RDA. I still believe he's in the mix if he beats Leon
I don't think so
Usman beat RDA pretty convincingly like 7 months ago
Prolly needs another win and for Usman to lose the title

and today we hear that Colby has a fight against Robbie next. Tough opponent for anyone.

Not if Nick Diaz comes back. Nick is the #1 contender if he can stop smoking weed & drinking 24/7
