whats up guys i went to my first class on Tuesday, Ive been hitting the gym for about 4 months but havent been that sore but just one JJ class and i could barely work the next day I was mostly Sore in my legs expecially my Hamstrings and groin area... have a few questions for any experienced people on here.

1.My feet are chaffed on the top almost like a rug burn on the my knuckles of my toes whats the best way to prevent this? Should i just keep going and eventyally my feet will toughen up or tape them? Im def going to have to wear a few bandaids on some of them tonight i dont want to bleed on the mat...

2. I shaved the morning before class and after class i noticed i had like razor burn on my neck is this why when you see fighters before a fight they look like grizzly adams? Is it best to not shave and have some Facial hair for BJJ?

3. last question is.......if i was able to get points and even mount blue belts on my first day but lose about 70 % of the matches is that pretty good lol we were only going for subs or one transition and we would stop and start again from side mount

1. You'll learn to move your body more efficiently and as a result will not get mat burn. Dragging your feet across the mat is not efficient.
2. Grapplers seem to enjoy keeping a good amount of facial hair. For whatever reason, but freshly shaved skin does have a tendency to chafe more when rubbed. I don't shave but that was habit from before BJJ.
3. They are going super, super easy. Don't worry, thats how you learn too.

4. These topics are covered almost weekly.
5. I lifted for 2 years before starting BJJ, and the full body ache, from using muscles that I didn't even know existed, lasted about 2 weeks. :D

1. mat burn...most common on the top of your feet, but can be had just about anywhere skin touches the mat. right now i've got a half inch diameter mat burn on the top of my fist...still pondering how that happened!

just take good care of it after training, and you can tape your feet as well...i think you'll find you'll get it less frequently the more technical you become.

2. make sure you use a good after shave lotion...should help.

3. you're doing good just to go to class at this point...get used to tapping, and don't forget to ask questions.

1 - get used to it lol :p i have that all the time. It gets better in time though. Your skin will get used to it. A way to prevent it is to try and put your toes/ball of your feet on the mat instead of the top of your feet. You know what i mean? My english isn't that good, sorry. This adjustment will also give you more grip.

2 - basically the same thing, your skin will get used to it in time. Your skin needs to get used to the rough surface of the gi rubbing against it.

3 - that's pretty good man! Were you guys going hard or easy on eachother?

Get yourself some neosporin and tape. Put neosporin on the area and tape it up for the night. Afterwards take the tape off and put a little more neosporin on but don't tape it up. It should be healed by tomorrow and tougher.

Shaving before a training session is not a good idea at all. Unless you have to shave for work, Id let the facial air grow a bit or shave daily and use after shave or rubbing alcohol immediately after.

Give yourself some time to make this determination for yourself, it is very likely that your blue belts were well aware of your inexperience and weren't trying much. Don't worry about "winning". Just train. Most likely, these same blue belts could really ruin your evening.

Good luck on your journey in BJJ, hope to see you on the mats some day.

Depending on how hard your rolling, you'll get gi burn on your face from time to time. If you have real sensitive skin like me, try to shave at night (that's what I do). I pretty much agree with what everyone else said about your third question. I let white belts put me in submissions all the time to see if I can get out. Sometimes I can't...tap.

1. Mat burn. It will get better but I still get it on my feet and occasionally on my knees when doing no gi. Shower after class, and put some antibiotic ointment and a bandaid on it for the first day or two.

2. Stop shaving. If you must shave, do it at night. I find this makes my face more comfortable for the next days class. Shaving is a dumb idea anyway. Who ever came up with that?

3. You undoubtedly sucked on your first day. Everyone does. Don't get overconfident and think you're a prodigy. Just keep learning the technique.

i don't like shaving within 24 hours of my next bjj class. don't want to get anything incase i have small cuts or irritations..(i'm probably just being over paranoid but better to b extra safe! lol)
-as far as 30% winning, and with blue belts, don't let it go over your head, most likely the instructor told them to let you get a couple of wins so you'll sign up for the year contract. ;)

When I started I could only do one class a week and my muscles would only just have started to feel fine again, it goes away.

Stick with it, it's the shit

yeah my hamstrings are sore as shit and im supposed to go to class at 515.....guess ill just make sure i stretch really good......

Hey man, just a warning, if you notice your "razor burn" getting worse, go to a doctor. I'm on antibiotics right now for that. Also, shaving before bjj is a bad idea.
