16 is given as the minimum age for a blue belt but the IBJJF graduation chart shows birth year - current year as the formula for calculating an athletes age.

We have a 15 year old green belt that has been training for 7 years, would it be correct that under the rules he would be deemed 16 come January 1st 2014 and eligible for blue belt?

At Don's Discount BJJ that have blue belts on sale in March - sizes medium, large and up to XXXL. It's based on waist size not age, unless you are buying the birthday purple belt but that's another story.

Yes, the same happened to me when I was on that age and I don't have any kind of problem competing in any CBJJ/IBJJF events...

You are correct. Kids Pan Ams this year cut off at birth year of 1999, teen 3. Adult Pans have birth year 1998 as their first category for juvenile 1. Strange situation indeed. If we are to follow the letter of blue belt only at sixteen, we theoretically put our six years of training green belt into juvenile 1 white. Facing the same conundrum ourselves for tournaments in the few months prior to turning sixteen.

We have very technical 15 year old green belts at our gym with 5+ years training, most definitely blue belt level, could honestly give purple belts trouble once they get more puberty/adult strength

I believe green belts, once they turn 16 can jump straight to purple...

once they reach the year they're turning 16, they can technically go from green to purple, but yes, blue is fine.

thanks for the feedback, he wants to do Europeans and entering him in juvenile 1 white belt wouldn't be fair on any one.

While I'd say he was close to purple in skill level I think time spent at blue belt is invaluable in terms of development

See, this is how BJJ is NOT evolving like it should,

If a 15 year old can be blue belt level after 7 years of training, than where is he to go when he starts training with adults. I already had my blue after a year and half. I'm constantly being challenged with all sorts of new stuff.

What have I seen that this kid hasn't? Not much.

I bet he's going to be expected to go STRAIGHT into competition as a result.
