That only does two things:

1. If they win, they only beat someone who they admitted wasn't very good anyway.

2. Even worse, if they lose, they lose to someone who they admit isn't too good.

If a fighter wants to say some derogatory things about a future opponent to build interest in the fight and maybe even give the impression threes bad blood between the two of them, insult a future opponent personally and not on his fighting ability. Instead attack his character or other things which aren't related to how good he is at fighting!

Well,

They want to sell the fight and one way to do that is to create friction and a reason for hatred.

Good post. I recall reading that some pro wrestlers subscribed to the idea that you should not belittle an opponent's ability due to this very reasoning.

All true. But as you may have figured out, fighters are usually not the sharpest tool in the shed.

Hype for $ .. create some interest with the added conflict.

Also mental attack, sometimes it works make them doubt themselves.

sell the fight, fuck with their opponent mentally

Then attack him verbally about aspects of him and his life that don't insult his fighting ability as the fight approaches. A good personal attack has more effect on someone's frame of mind than saying he isn't all that good a fighter. Then if you win there is the very important result that you beat someone you couldn't help but admit is a great fighter and if you lose, there's no shame in losing to someone great.

kinda like connor bragging about beating fighters because he's bigger than them?

Because the GSP method of calling every opponent his "toughest fight ever" got really tired...We knew that was bullshit also

I have thought about this...but you can't put too much thought into what these guys do. Most of them have CTE. The approach only really makes sense if you are going to take on a Conor persona where everyone is beneath you...and then the intrigue makes you tune in because you want to see if he can back up his words..or eat his words.

They try to get into the opponents head
That simple

What is it you don't understand? Its like when Conor was fighting Aldo. Aldo is used to people telling him how great he is, even his opponents. So when someone comes along and tells him that he's a bum, his chin is deteriorated and he'll knock him out in the first exchange, it messes him up and makes him question himself. He can shy away or he can be aggressive and over extend, the point is he gets an emotion out of him.

Because you touch yourself at night
