Besides being Mexican/Mexican American holidays, I think it has become boxing's official "Super Bowl" days.
Mayweather, from my knowledge, basically made it a tradition for boxing, and now Canelo has taken that spot and continued the legacy.
Oscar actually only fought on the Cinco De Mayo weekend twice before he fought Floyd that day.
The fight right before Floyds against Mayorga. And in 1995 against Puerto Rican Rafael Ruelas.
But Oscar did fight on Mexican Independance Day weekend in September about 6 times.

Mayweather's fought on those weekends 11 times starting with the Oscar fight, with only the Hatton fight not being on one of those weekends. Out of those 11 he only fought 2 Mexican fighters, 3 if we count De La Hoya.

I put that out there to show that it doesnt have to be a Mexican Boxing Holiday but just a traditional boxing holiday.

But i enjoy looking forward towards those days because for the last 10 years, you've been able to count on those weekends to bring big enjoyable fights.
