The Last Samurai= Beautiful Movie or Hollywood propaganda?

Still. They could have made him look good/improved without being seen as the Samurai's equal. I thought was loosely based on a true story.

I also hated the part where Tom Cruise closes his eyes and envisions how the fight would go before the last duel draw.

Really fucking cheesy. All of the sudden he has mystical eastern powers

It was a solid film all around. Was it anti-Westerners? From the perspective of the Samurai, they do not care for all that comes with the more "modern" world in Japan and I think it has less to do with the Westerners.

Also, Tom Cruise is not the last samurai. The world samurai in plural form is the same as it is in singular form. The last samurai was not meant to say Tom Cruise's character was the last single Samurai living but that Ken Watanabe and his samurai warriors are the last samurai left.

Clearly they meant Tom Cruise is the Last Samurai

No. They were total douchebags

I'll say this shit, the day that samurai are no longer cool and romantic figures it the day it's time to go ahead and check out of this world.

Someone else said knights weren't cool, either.

What's next, Green Berets?

also an extra got full on Sparta kicked by a horse, took it like a straight G

this movie is incredible haha

dude even fell back into formation, get this cat a Silver Star or something

Holy shit that's commitment.

The poster suggests that, but the film did not.

It was loosely based on a Japanese historical figure who was called the "last true samurai" and led a rebellion similar to the one in the film, although they used modern weapons, until "at the end of the conflict, running out of materiel and ammunition, they had to fall back to close-quarter tactics and the use of swords, bows and arrows."

That was the whole point of the movie. The samurai way of life was being pushed aside for western industrialized warfare, and Watanabe's character was fighting to protect his heritage. It was heavily romanticized but it was a pretty good film.

All those people are cool in theory, not so much in actual reality. I mean I love stuff set in medieval times, but goddamn people were douches back then.

You can say that for just about every era in the past, though. I'm sure it will be said of our era as well.

I think 'Samurai' was meant to be plural brah.

So there was a guy who led the exact same rebellion and was called "the last true samurai" but you don't think he inspired this movie?

He may have inspired more than one character. He certainly wasn't alone in his cause, but he obviously isn't the protagonist. I don't think it's a stretch that it goes either way.

I saw it in theaters and walked out thinking it was a nearly perfect movie. Years later I can see it being Hollywood white wash but you can't knock the acting, story and cinematography. It's a beautiful and emotional movie. I think a lot of people also get hung up on the title. While it's a play on words, Samurai is mean to be plural.

Yeah, the only difference now is people try to behave more due to word spreading via news and social media. Imagine some of the people today if they lived in the societies back then. If you were smart and rich or well connected, I imagine the level of doucheness you could get away with. That was something I always liked about Game of Thrones.

Well sure. Anything that's over romanticized is a lot uglier when you look at the details.

Its a fine movie. Keep it simple. No need to over complicate it.

I think everything has positive and negative qualities.

You can celebrate the good without condoning the bad.

Yeah like I said I love stuff in that setting, but I also realize it would suck to actually live in those times. The idea of being a knight or a samurai or a ninja will always be cool, even if those guys were basically assholes.
