Who does it.

Pro's and cons for grappling, striking, overall wellbeing?

I shave my head not for grappling reasons. I"M GOING FUCKING BALD!!!!!

I figure I'm going to beat nature to the punch and just get rid of it all!

I do know people hate it when I have a small amount of stubble. My head's like a rock covered with sandpaper. I scrape the fuck out of people.

haha, i figured somebody sooner or later would have said because of balding. So for a real competition, leave the stubble as a good annoying defense?

I'd say a slight advantage in combat sports since people can't grab your hair. It also reduces friction so things may slip off your head a bit more, which is generally good.

But overall it doesn't make too much of a difference.

Shaving your head can be beneficial for a number of reasons, the main being:
1. It's low-maintenance. After hours of rolling, all you have to do to clean yourself off is take a bar of soap and rub your scalp (no need for shampoo). After showering, there's no drying off period- it's wipe off and go.
2. It's cooler- Maybe it's psychological, but a shaved head definitely feels better for me when I'm on the mat.
On a hot summer day, it makes a big difference for me.
3. It feels cleaner- When I train, I sweat more than I ever have doing anything else, so afterwards, it feels less sticky and is nice not to have a sponge feeling thing on top of your dome lol

4. And lastly- I makes you an amazing BJJ technician. Upon shaving your head, you'll be tapping out black belts with flying omaplata's in no time. hahaha.

On a hot summer day it can also fuck you up. About 2 weeks after I started shaving my head I was out in the sun all day and my head was as red as a baboons ass. Sleeping sucked and I looked like a freak!

Now I either wear a hat or dowse my head with sunscreen. I'm a white guy just in case you couldn't guess :icon_chee

that's what i wanted to know

I've grown my hair out a few times, but two things make this just next to unbearable: Any combat sport, but especially grappling; and working in a restaurant.

Grappling with long hair sucks. Short is the way to go. I don't shave my head, but I keep it buzzed pretty short.

Biggest benifit of shaving your head? can you tell, I just woke up from a nap?

^^ I see you've gone with the 'wind-swept' look. It suits you.

Low maintenance? Really? How about the fact that you need to shave your head every other day? I am going bald and am at the point of shaving it, but think the maintenance is going to be a problem. I have a hard time keeping my face shaved.

Lol, really? Are you a grizzly bear, or some form of marsupial?

Though I guess keeping your head 'shaved' and keeping it 'buzzed' are two different things. I buzz my hair and don't consider it very high-maintenance. But shaving it might be something else altogether.

Hopefully I won't have to find out.

I use a #3 guad. . . 3/8's of an inch. Only problem is that I have an eight inch scar on the top of my head. It really looks like something out of a horror movie, and when people get up the nerve to ask what happened I make up all kinds of crazy stories.

Lol. I have a small bald spot on the side of my head from a nasty spill I took as a child, and a bad scar on my forearm from a burn that both earn me a lot of questions. I'm horrible at keeping a straight face, but I make up my share of stories too.

It's impressive the things people will believe if you say it with seriousness.

LOL, the other day I was in a store looking at some wigs for a Halloween costume, and a little old lady came up to me and asked how my "chemotherapy" was going.

Elimination of head hair reduces the chances of someone controlling your hair in a real life self defense situation.

Controlling meaning to use to throw you around or down to the ground, or to expose your neck to strikes.

Lol, nice. I've gotten a few jokes at my expense. My gf used to tell people I had just finished a stint at St. Jude's (cancer hospital).

I'm also going bald (at a lovely 31 years of age, love my genes). While I would love to shave my head smooth, in my conservative profession I would be frowned upon, so I just buzz my head on the lowest/shortest setting (#1) once a week. That is considered much more acceptable looking. On a side note, I also have started taking both finasteride and dutasteride to try and least maintain the status quo with the hair.

Wow is that really you?

I had pictured you like an old wise kungfu dude or something:icon_chee

You said something about your age si I thought you were like 60 years old hehe

Shaving your head is also good for showing off that killer butterfly tattoo you have on the back of your head.
