Seth MacFarlane's THE ORVILLE (Season 3 Coming to Hulu)

I watched the first half or so of season 1. It wasn’t very good. Unless it picks up a lot, I don’t see what you guys are seeing in this show
season 1 is weird because it's clear he pitched it as "I want to make fun of Star Trek", but what he really wanted was to make Star Trek. So there is a lot of forced comedy in the beginning and then it starts to get more serious. By season 3 there are a couple of chuckles in an episode.

I was lukewarm on S1, but it gets better. Like @brownbelt86 said, first season was pitched as a parody and it felt like Family Guy in space, but still had great writing for the serious bits. S2 steps it up with the thought-provoking themes, but some of it still feels rushed because the episodes are written for a 1-hour TV block with commercials. S3 is on a different platform and episodes are around 70 minutes without TV restrictions. They pull out all the stops and are firmly in "big budget space soap opera" territory. If you liked the earlier Star Trek stuff, this series is the torchbearer for that now. Bortus in particular is fucking awesome. He starts out as a Worf parody but pulls off the dramatic scenes so well, he ends up being better than the actual Worf.

Did you at least make it to the episode, where Isaac is learning what pranks are, and makes attempts to join the humans in on pranking each other? Man, that was a side splitter for me! lol!

Never really watched any Star Trek aside from original TV show and that cast's movies.

Watched S1E1 on Disney+ and not that bad. I guess I'll watch S1E2. Palicki's face and body are above average. I like seeing the futuristic environments.

I wonder if they intentionally make her look less attractive on Orville to make her seem more serious. I've never seen Friday Night Lights, but I thought she looked much better on Agents of SHIELD. It's like the Orville uniform and hairstyle they gave her are purposefully ugly.

I watched half of S1 and zero complaints about her looks or hair.

The strong alien girl reminds me of Jennifer Garner.

The uniform was unflattering for sure. It looks like a marching band outfit or some shit and doesn't do any favors to the hot women on the show. In uniform, Alara looks like Eddie Munster.

But she was super gorgeous in every other outfit she wore on the show:

No idea her boobs were that big.

I hope they have another season
The finale in the last season was meh though

It's a men's style uniform meant to conceal curves and make you look boxy even if you have a gut. Palicki can kind of pull it off because she's a 5' 11" amazon and also very thin. But like the other women on the show, she still looks way better in anything else.

Also her sonning Bortus' angry power bottom husband was a great scene. Kind of ridiculous but it worked because of who they're both supposed to be.

With the small fake boobs and narrow hips, sometimes I wonder if that's a guy.

Yeah, she's a good looking woman but kind of bordering on WNBA proportions. They gave her the Sigourney Weaver female action hero treatment this last season and she pulled off all her scenes, but a normal-sized woman probably would have looked ridiculous doing what they had her do. You can see how tall she is standing next to 5' 10" Seth MacFarlane in the top pic above (she's 5' 11") and she's wearing flat soled men's shoes.

Liked season 1 and then really loved season 2.

Watched 2 eps of season 3 and it just didn't feel as good.

Didn't realize The Orville was on Disney+ until I saw this thread. Now 6 episodes into S3 and it's as good as ever. Yeah, Bortus is a boss. He's incredibly well done with simultaneous comedy and depth. The Moclan porn in S2E2 was gold. Race of gay toughguy misogynists who sit on eggs to give birth lmao. Bortus had some show stealing scenes in S3E6 with his kid's issues. The slapstick might actually make the social commentary more effective - it's like, "I'm not even taking myself seriously but I'll just leave this here."

Only complaint is they shouldn't have dropped the Alara Kitan chick. She was way hotter and her character more interesting than Talla, her replacement. Apparently Seth MacFarlane was banging Halston Sage IRL so that may have played a role, although she did make the cameo at the end of S2 and I see she's credited somewhere in S3 as well.

Old post, but I thought she left for a role on Prodigal son.

I think you're right. Not clear if briefly dating MacFarlane had an impact but she seems to have left with professional relationship intact given her cameos in S2 and S3. As an actress, I'm sure a serious dramatic role was much better for her career than her Orville role, which was essentially a gag character with super strength.
