"Ward's trainer has offered to work with me, it is an interesting proposal. I asked my manager to find out if all of this is true and under what conditions... will Ward remain at his current weight as I've heard that he wants to move up. If me and him have the same trainer and we are both in the same weight division, then it doesn't make sense. But I do need a new trainer, I've already made a decision on this for myself," Kovalev told reporters in Russia.

“I need a new specialist, because I made it to this level with all I know. In order for me to jump to the next level, and become better than Ward, I need help of a professional. Moving forward now is the most difficult period." Kovalev believes that he is draining his body to make the light heavyweight limit of 175, and now he's seriously looking to move up to the cruiserweight limit of 200-pounds.

kovalev will get destroyed at cruiserweight

after the 200s take his best shot he will get walked down and brutally kod.

if he couldnt take the body shots of ward and 160 golovkin, who allegedly dropped sergey in sparring, whats he going to do when he moves up 25 pounds

He's drastically better than Tony Bellew and Bellew has had some limited success. It's not like CW is full of proven killers. I could see Kovalev having plenty of meaningful success. In terms of guys who can outbox him from range, I'd only really have faith in Usyk (and even then, not complete faith), and it's not like there are many fighters in boxing, period, who can infight like Andre Ward.

Do you have a link?

Kovalev can do well at Cruiser if his gas tank isnt a problem anymore and if he learns to diverisfy his arsenal beyond straight 1-2s (upper cuts, hooks, consistent body work, etc). His lack of size can be made up with timing. Kovalev has impressive timing for someone his size( it was good enough to confuse Ward for long stretches).

But the over arching problem is Kovalev's mental fortitude. I think he's been exposed as mentally fragile. The cruisersweights will not be intimidated by his punching power in the same way light heavies were. He's gotta have more tricks in the bag.

i took the golovkin body shot in sparring that supposedly dropped kovalev as possibly a fluke. now that ward kod him with body shots(albiet some couldve been low that contributed to the ko) im conlcuding that sergey has weak punch resistance and fighters moving up in weight with weak punch resitacne generally dont do well.

he gets by on his power and that wont be the case at 200

He doesn't really get just by on his power, though. He's a pretty prototypical boxer-puncher. He was outboxing Andre Ward from the outside. Where he failed against Ward was due to a lack of versatility, but again, Ward might be the most versatile fighter in the sport. He'll have a clear quickness advantage over most CWs and he might be better than everyone at the weight from midrange (Usyk would be the only one I'd entertain putting ahead of him). His power will translate fine, as well. People are rating the likes of Dorticos and Gassiev high despite them not really achieving a whole lot so far. Let's not forget that Dorticos hit a blown up Edison Miranda of all people with the kitchen sink and couldn't get him out of there.

kov does have a solid jab but his power is what carried him at 175. boxers were beat before they entered the ring. and there is no way to know if he is going to retain his quickness when he adds weight. his power will undoubtely be less formative

not many 175s move up to 200 and are successful and i dont think kov will be any different

Kovalev was considerably better than Adamek at LHW (better puncher, better boxer, better athlete) and Adamek had success all the way up to HW. Bellew has already had limited success, a lot of it due to his punching power (Kovalev is a much better puncher than Bellew, a much better boxer, and a much better athlete). Usyk is a legitimately good CW (and I certainly wouldn't be confident in choosing Kovalev over Usyk), but outside of Usyk, a lot of the talent is either mediocre of really unproven.

adamek was a guy that did not rely on power like sergey. he had much better mobility as well as much higher output. he had more to work with. guys that rely on power as opposed to their skillset are exposed when they move up out of weight class.

as for bellew, tony has solid punch resistance( i believe that he could no longer make 175 and lead to his ko loss to adonis) which i do not think kovalev has.

i mean, kov was allegedly kod by a bodyshot by golovkin in sparring

16 ounce gloves

take away wards ko win over a drained dawson and who has andre stopped other than seergy kovalev?

IF the weight cut is actually a problem then he would benefit from going up. Significant weight cuts can ruin peoples ability to take damage body stamina wise.

I dont actually believe that its an issue though.

it could be but unlikely. all i remember reading prior to the rematch was kovalevs excuses on why he gassed in the first fight and what he and his team did to correct it. the krusher was not there for the first fight but was going to be there for the rematch

now since he got kod, hes making the same excuses as before.

guys delusional and will get wrecked at 200

Tend to agree on Kova, just mean the weight cuts in general. They can fuck your ability to take shots up bad.

Well, I never really thought JDJ was a great trainer, but how great a student was Kovalev?

Whatever, if he's serious, maybe he could get in on the Cruiserweight tournament
