Redaxe's Training Log

I'm going to start doing the Boring But Big assistance template for 5/3/1. I think I could benefit from extra volume at a low intensity.

Didn't even lift Thursday. Had dinner with mom and bro.

Saturday morning
Deadlifts
225x5
275x3
315x3
350x5
405x3
445xfail (let the bar get too far forward)
445x3 (rep PR)

For my physiology , I agree with Rippetoe, the bar needs to be touching my shins on the way up. It feels a lot lighter that way.

Bench
135x8
165x5
185x5
205x5
230x5
155x10x5

No-gi BJJ

Wow Axe is such a beast.

Signed up for a local BJJ tournament on the 29th. Looking forward to it, and not cutting weight so it should be more fun than usual.

Lifting in the morning so I can do more BJJ at night.

Squats (deload week)
155x5
195x5
235x5
185x10x5

BBB is cardio in disguise, holy shit.

Wednesday I did ohp in the morning.
BJJ M,W,Th,Sa. Getting ready for next Saturday's tournament.

Saturday morning
Bench
135x8
165x5
185x5
205x5
215x5
225x5
225x5

Sunday
Deadlifts
135x5
225x5
315x5
365x5
405x8
This was a legit set of 8, only a few seconds between reps to reset. Felt pretty easy, could have gotten 10 but wanted to leave something in the tank for my assistance. Then I did 30 total pull ups and 20 upright rows (kinda power shrugs I guess).

Also mowed the lawn and walked the dog with my wife. And ate a ton of delicious pork dumplings at Ding Tai Fung. Pretty good day.

Fucking OHP.

Squats
135x5x2
225x5
255x5
295x5
335x6
335x4
Felt kinda heavy today. I haven't squatted heavy in a couple of weeks because I actually took a deload week. That is probably the reason. It's certainly not for lack of eating.

Didn't do BBB sets because I have a BJJ competition on Saturday and I don't want to have DOMS.

OHP
95x3
115x3
130x3
145x4
145x5
85x10x5

Couldn't do any better than 145x5. Literally no progress at all on OHP over the last month. I am only just as strong as I was at OHP a year ago when I PR'd at 165. What the fuck. Why do I even do OHP at all?

Fell off on my logging. Oops. So I'll just post the highlights.

BJJ competition on 3/28, only had one match, which was a seven minute war that I lost on points, I had a lot of fun though.

4/5 I got my brown belt in BJJ. feels good man.

4/8 I squatted 375 lbs x3, previous max was 375x1. I was going for 5 but it felt pretty heavy that day. Max should break 400 soon, I think I just need to put the weight on the bar.

Deadlift on Tuesday was supposed to be 455xAMRAP but I decided to test my max instead. I did 465 and then 475, for a 20 lb PR. I started to lose my grip after I locked it out, looks like I need to do some grip work.

I think my deadlift will break 500 soon, but first I need to buy more plates! I can only fit 475 on the bar with what I currently have.

Congrats on the promotion man. Thats awesome!!

I've read your whole blog
I'm a mid-level blue belt and tried to roll out of the wrong armbar 3 weeks ago. A sudden sharp pop and pain in my shoulder followed. Honestly felt like I got hit with a bat. I knew I was hurt pretty bad. Had to sit on the side of the mat trying not to vomit for a while before I could make it to my car.
Fortunately one of the brown belts I train with is an orthopedic and got me in to see him the next day. Had an MRI the next morning which confirmed a complete pectoral tendon tear.
I had my surgery about a week and a half ago and am currently stuck in my sling. I've been hitting the excercise bike, limited legs, and abs almost everyday.
I'm a professional firefighter and being out of commission for 4-6 months really sucks.
Having been through this injury any advise you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
