Hey everyone, longtime console gamer thinking about switching to PC got a few questions

What is the standard price range for a PC and how often do you have to upgrade it??

What other accessories do you need??(virus protection, mouse, keyboard etc)

When you buy games on steam who can you play with?? Xbox gamers? PS4 gamers? Only other PC gamers??

What would you say the biggest advantage PC gaming over console?? Biggest disadvantage?

Edit: Also hit me up with any PC recommendations or good sites to look at them. Don’t really have a set budget but I would say 750-1250 range would be ideal

Only other pc gamers, it would be unfair if you used a kb/mouse and they had to use a controller.

Is there a good amount of PC gamers? Do you ever have a problem finding matches with popular games?

You can get cheaper than the below, but I wouldn't recommend it. These two PCs hit the sweet spot for value, practical performance, and adequate relevance for longevity:
  1. The most glaring omission from this bestselling unit is the lack of a superfast SSD drive for the operating system, but that's not necessarily critical for gamers, especially since all the other builds in the sub-$1K won't have more than a 256GB SSD, at best, and 120GB-256GB SSD's aren't exactly going to hold massive game libraries in 2017 and going forward. The greatest advantage to SSDs, only if the game is installed on the SSD, is a decrease in load times. This is negligible for some games, significant for most, and HUGE for some (ex. GTA V).
    ($699) CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Xtreme GXIVR8020A4 Desktop Gaming PC (Intel i5-7400 3.0GHz, AMD RX 580 4GB, 8GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB 7200RPM HDD, WiFi, Win 10 Home), Black - VR Ready
  2. This one has the SSD, but no WiFi, and it sports the more popular NVIDIA GTX 1060 3GB instead of the AMD RX 580 4GB video card. This is the most popular PC video card currently in existence. In terms of power, though, they're practically identical, and the RX 580 has the slightly superior theoretical ceiling which is usually realized after AMD fully refines their drivers for games, who are slower than NVIDIA with this, so they tend to "age" better:
    ($849) CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Xtreme VR GXIVR8060A4 Desktop Gaming PC (Intel i5-7400 3.0GHz, NVIDIA GTX 1060 3GB, 8GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB HDD, 120GB SSD, Win 10 Home) Black

Notes:

  • Both of these units are ~2.5x as powerful as the original Xbox One and PS4.
  • They are both about 35% more powerful than the PS4 Pro.
  • They are not, however, quite as powerful as new Xbox One X (~45% less powerful). To beat that you will have to invest over $1K. The XBX is an incredible hardware value right now.
What would you say the biggest advantage PC gaming over console?? Biggest disadvantage?
That's an enormous question. I'm tempted to Google for a Reddit FAQ to spare me 2000 words. I've written at length about it on here in the past. I'll leave this to the forum.

It depends on the game, but there are huge player pools. The more PC-specific game types have the largest player pools of any games in the world (ex. MOBAs: League of Legends, Dota 2, Heroes of the Storm, etc).

In fact, I read recently a metric suggesting that LoL dropped users for the first time, but at its peak earlier this year, it had 110 million active monthly players. That's over 50% larger than the entire player pool of the Playstation Network or Xbox Live Network combined. I'd written about this extensively, recently:
http://forums.sherdog.com/posts/133842755/

FPS shooters probably have a more healthy overall pool on consoles, since that's their niche, but PC mainstays of the genre like CS:GO see peak concurrent gamer figures of 500K or better on pretty much any given day. Moving to non-FPS shooters, right now PUBG is ~4x bigger on PC alone than Fortnite is on all platforms combined (PC, PS4, XB1, MacOS). It's the biggest gaming phenomenon of 2017, easily.

The key service for PC gamers akin to the PSN or XBL networks is Steam. Only Valve is transparent with this stuff. Everyone else keeps it hidden unless times are good, and they want to brag to potential investors and stockholders.

I have invested a significant portion of time in the below post for our build thread to help introduce new PC gamers to the PC gaming world (this post isn't about building). I'll update and repost that below in full for everyone to see, but here is the link (Post #3):

Steam [PC]

GOG [PC]
  • The "Good Old Games" depository is the largest PC gaming merchant focusing on exclusively DRM-free content. For this reason, virtually any game or developer outside of Steam that isn't big enough to host its own servers or retail service can be found on this website. That doesn't mean it only has indie material. It also carries any major or AAA games that resist DRM schemes in their software. It has its own Wiki service devoted to this catalogue that currently stands at 1,955 DRM-free titles:
    https://www.gogwiki.com/wiki/Main_Page
  • The GOG is known for major giveaways such as the Alien vs. Predator extravaganza, and also major sales. Here is the Reddit dedicated to these sales:
    https://www.reddit.com/domain/gog.com/
  • The GOG Galaxy is a competing service to Steam that launched back in 2014, and finally on April 26, 2017, left its Beta phase with the launch of v1.2 featuring universal cloud saves across gaming platforms. Think of it as a cloud gaming service that maintains all your progress, but doesn't ask for your game receipts:

Humble Bundle [PC]

Sony PS Now [PC / PS4]
  • $20 ---- monthly ($20.00/mo)
  • $45 ---- quarterly ($15.00/mo)
  • $100 -- yearly ($8.33/mo)
    • cloud-based gaming service that is currently streaming only; cannot download to disc
    • As of 2015, there are two ways to stream games in PlayStation Now: either as (1) a subscription-based service like Netflix, allowing unlimited access to all games covered by the subscription model, or by (2) renting games individually for a set period of time, usually available to rent in one of four time frames: 4-hour, 7-day, 30-day, and 90-day.
    • Over 500 titles in library (heavily PS3 titles so far; only 37x PS4 titles, but PS4 titles growing rapidly; PS/PS2/PSP titles rumored for the future)

Origin Access [PC]
  • $5 ---- monthly ($5.00/mo)
  • $30 -- yearly ($2.50/mo)

World of Warcraft [PC]
  • $15 -- monthly ($15.00/mo)
  • $42 -- quarterly ($14.00/mo)
  • $78 -- biannually ($13.00/mo)
    • While the Blizzard Battle.net service is required for download to play all Blizzard games, and is the exclusive network where one can play Blizzard games online, the subscription fees apply only to World of Warcraft accounts.
    • These are the other five Blizzard games:
      (1) Diablo III (2) Hearthstone (3) Heroes of the Storm (4) Overwatch (5) Starcraft II

Emulation Software

This isn't necessarily restricted to gaming-class hardware, or even PC's, but a thread that any will find interesting:
Internet Archive Brings 1000's of Free Arcade, DOS, & PC Games to Your Browser

Perhaps more stable emulation than universal HTML5 javascript run through browsers is to use actual emulation software. Let's assume one is using Windows, since it's the most common platform by far, and if you're using Linux, you're probably not the type who needs a ton of help. This is a frequently updated Reddit post that gives a survey of the different consoles and their finest emulators on a Windows PC:
emulatorguide: PC Master Race
Here is the master subreddit for all things emulation. You can learn the finer points of emulation, here. For example, you can reference this for discussion of accessories where you will learn that you can purchase the original controllers for the respective consoles, brand new at stores like Amazon, designed specifically for PC emulation, and for very little money. To offer an example, the last time I checked, it was $12 for a Nintendo pad with a USB-input at the end of its cord via Amazon.

We're starting to hit the holiday sale season. I thought I would mention one of the custom pre-made gaming PCs on the market in a smaller form factor. This MSI Trident model is taking a go at the budget entry market for these machines. The Corsair One, of course, is the most famous product of this kind on the market, but it targets the high-end ($2K+). Like the Corsair One, it isn't designed to be upgraded, so even adding an m.2 drive or upgrading RAM requires removal of a sticker over the top side cover screw that voids the warranty.

Nevertheless, with the $100 rebate, this thing is actually about as strong a deal as the $850 CyberPowerPC above as it offers all the same hardware for $50 less. The one exception is the GTX 1060 version used is the laptop version, though, so it sacrifices total gaming power.

Techradar: MSI Trident 3 review
Techradar said:
Final verdict
The MSI Trident 3 is a handsome and compact gaming PC we would gladly add to our home entertainment setup. Between the styling of the case and its size, MSI’s mini desktop isn’t all that different than an Xbox One or PS4. It’s not the most powerful desktop rig in the world, but it’s got more than enough gusto to play games at higher graphics settings than the PS4 Pro can push.

The notebook-style power supply limits the upgradability of this system, but with what comes in the box, you can go far with gaming at Ultra quality. The most delightful thing about the Trident 3 is how cool and silently it runs. This is by far one of the best gaming PCs you can have sit alongside your TV or on a small computer desk.

Score = 4.5/5.0 stars

Finally, for those curious about gaming PCs who need a laptop, but see the need for a new laptop as an opportunity to spend a bit more for gaming power...that's actually a realistic strategy these days; what was once true only for desktops is now true in the portable world, as well.
