Nicolas Sarkozy in police custody over campaign funding (ca$h from Gaddafi)

I never really dove into the story too deep, but wasn't Gaddafi executed on account of Global interest, because he wanted to introduce an African currency based on gold, which would have caused the Euro to plummet?

It sounds like he did some great things for Libya. A quick Google search showed me these Gaddafi policies ...

1. In Libya a home is considered a natural human right
In Gaddafi’s Green Book it states: ”The house is a basic need of both the individual and the family, therefore it should not be owned by others”. Gaddafi’s Green Book is the formal leader’s political philosophy, it was first published in 1975 and was intended reading for all Libyans even being included in the national curriculum.

2. Education and medical treatment were all free
Under Gaddafi, Libya could boast one of the best healthcare services in the Middle East and Africa. Also if a Libyan citizen could not access the desired educational course or correct medical treatment in Libya they were funded to go abroad.

3. Gaddafi carried out the world’s largest irrigation project
The largest irrigation system in the world also known as the great manmade river was designed to make water readily available to all Libyan’s across the entire country. It was funded by the Gaddafi government and it said that Gaddafi himself called it ”the eighth wonder of the world”.

4. It was free to start a farming business
If any Libyan wanted to start a farm they were given a house, farm land and live stock and seeds all free of charge.

5. A bursary was given to mothers with newborn babies
When a Libyan woman gave birth she was given 5000 (US dollars) for herself and the child.

6. Electricity was free
Electricity was free in Libya meaning absolutely no electric bills!

7. Cheap petrol
During Gaddafi’s reign the price of petrol in Libya was as low as 0.14 (US dollars) per litre.

8. Gaddafi raised the level of education
Before Gaddafi only 25% of Libyans were literate. This figure was brought up to 87% with 25% earning university degrees.

9. Libya had It’s own state bank
Libya had its own State bank, which provided loans to citizens at zero percent interest by law and they had no external debt.

10. The gold dinar
Before the fall of Tripoli and his untimely demise, Gaddafi was trying to introduce a single African currency linked to gold. Following in the foot steps of the late great pioneer Marcus Garvey who first coined the term ”United States of Africa”. Gaddafi wanted to introduce and only trade in the African gold Dinar – a move which would have thrown the world economy into chaos.

The Dinar was widely opposed by the ‘elite’ of today’s society and who could blame them. African nations would have finally had the power to bring itself out of debt and poverty and only trade in this precious commodity. They would have been able to finally say ‘no’ to external exploitation and charge whatever they felt suitable for precious resources. It has been said that the gold Dinar was the real reason for the NATO led rebellion, in a bid to oust the outspoken leader.

So I was just wondering how much weight the content in the spoiler tag carries. Was there atrocities that out weighed the good, or was this just a move to secure the Dollar and the Euro?
I'll check that list but if true, impressive and interesting.

No. Yes, he (allegedly) proposed it. But, there is no rational reason to think that a gold backed African dinar would have been a threat the dollar and euro. It would have had no effect on their buying power. Leaving aside the fundamental absurdity of that proposal, Gaddhafi's dinar would have been backed by all of 7 billion in hidden gold reserves.

The alternative version of the CT is that the dinar would have undercut french influence in Africa because it would have supplanted the CFA Franc.

The CFA Franc (two versions), was introduced by the French to their colonies in the 1940s. It's now managed by the West African Economic and Monetary Union (and the Central African Bank, which also has a goal of creating a single African currency). Libya's proposal would have been tied into that, but it's one of the least serious ones along those lines, because the other countries have already agreed on a framework of regional stability+currencies first with which it's not consistent. The CFA Franc is the best example of that so far, so this would ironically have undermined the goal of a panafrican currency.

(I'm not getting into his other policies-its just the gold currency thing I think was a silly CT).

What's a Danish Train, is it like a Rusty Trombone?

Lol no.

Denmark were renewing all the trains in the country. The contract went to an Italian company ( who totally fucked it up ).
All of a sudden pictures were surfacing of one of the danish train sets, that had yet to be delivered, sitting in the middle of a desert. Investigators were sent and it turned out the Italian pm Berlusconi had given it to gadaffi as a present. Lol.

Sounds like a very Italian thing to do

Jesus. Sounds like something a Bond villain would do. Overboard even for the son of a Hungarian aristocrat. Burn him at the stake if true.

That was for his 2007 presidential campaign, while he has already been charged for his failed 2012 run where he is suspected of a 15 millions euros campaign fraud (the cash didn't end in his pocket, but he used his party's money to hide illegal expenses). Good thing he didn't run a third time...

So many world leaders in trouble for corruption related shit.

After the custody (usually a maximum of 48 hours in France), Nicolas Sarkozy has officially been charged (French + paywall, that's all I got right now) with corruption (up to 10 years in jail and 1 million euros in fines), illegal funding of an electoral campaign (3 years and 45000 euros max) and concealment of stolen public assets (5 years and 375000 euros max).

I'm trying my best to translate the charges, hope it makes sense. One important detail: in France, if you are convicted of several crimes at the same time, you only do the longest sentence, they don't add-up. You have to pay all the fines though.

Edit : here is a source in English : Sarkozy Charged in Libyan Campaign-Finance Case.

Sarkozy has just been charged with corruption and influence peddling in a different case. The former President and his lawyer are heavily suspected of getting illegal informations about some of his ongoing cases by an "avocat général" (I guess it would be the equivalent of the man right under the state attorney's authority), who was promised a nice promotion (that he didn't even get, lol).

No link in English yet, but Sarkozy keeps bringing the shame on French people, even those like me who never voted for him or his party.

Nicolas Sarkozy est renvoyé en correctionnelle pour "trafic d'influence" et "corruption"
