International [NATO News] What Sweden brings to NATO as its Newest Member

Yea I'm not sure there is much to take away from any of that when you have the guaranteed protection of NATO and therefore no fear of retaliation.

Russia was made an international pariah because of the Ukraine war and yet it's still not nearly as diplomatically isolated as Turkey is (despite NATO). If anything, it's Putin that can teach him. They have competing interests in the black Sea so they fuck with each other.
It's Putin that is fighting for his life in Ukraine. I don't remember Erdogan ever making such a monumental f*** up.

Russia has 3 times the GDP of Turkey, so of course Russia is going to have more hangers on. Germany were virtually bankrolling Russia for gas, but Putin f**ked that one in the ass. Turkey however managed to get into NATO, and are far closer to joining the EU than Russia ever will be.... And why are so many highly educated Russians fleeing to Turkey if Putin has it so under control?

The point is Poland have indicated their willingness to take on Russia. The Baltics in general are far more motivated to take on Russia. The US and Germany are the biggest sandbaggers in NATO right now in terms of tackling Russia head on. If Russia had invaded Canada, the US would be calling for WWIII right now. But somewhere in Europe, meh....

I hadn't even thought of that. I can't see Russia ever invading Kazakhstan to assimilate their non-slavic young people into Mother Russia to boost the ebbing population.

If they had invaded Kazahstan in 2022 th most likely Xi had ordered small special military operation to deMilitarize and deNazify Russia..
Otherwise russia mainly is seeing them as area " should be their puppet ".
+ Kazahstan does have very huge potential for mining industry....

US moves on F-16 jets for Turkey after Sweden NATO U-turn
Turkey has long sought the purchase of 40 F-16s from the US, and fresh talks with Washington come after Ankara ended its opposition to Sweden's NATO membership.

United States Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has discussed support for Turkey's military modernization in a phone call with Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler, the Pentagon said late Monday.

It comes after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed to send Sweden's accession protocol for joining NATO to parliament for approval.

The US stance on Turkey's military modernization
US President Joe Biden's administration has backed Turkey's desire to purchase 40 new Lockheed Martin Corp F-16 fighter jets along with modernization kits for its existing warplanes from the US.

"I stand ready to work with President Erdogan and Turkey on enhancing defense and deterrence in the Euro-Atlantic area," Biden said on Monday.

However, some in Congress, mainly Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Menendez, have opposed the move over Turkey blocking NATO membership for Sweden, its human rights record and its relations with Greece, among other concerns.

Mendez, a Democrat, said that he was "continuing to have reservations" on providing the fighter aircraft to Turkey.

"If they (Biden administration) can find a way to ensure that Turkey's aggression against its neighbors ceases, which there has been a lull the last several months, that's great but there has to be a permanent reality."

Menendez added that there needs to be a way to "beef up Greece's security" and obtain "assurances about future actions."

What Turkey said about F-16 jets from the US
Meanwhile, Turkish President Erdogan said on Monday that his country's ratification of Sweden's NATO membership bid and the sale of F-16 jets are not to be linked to each other.

He made the comments before leaving for the NATO summit in Vilnius.

Erdogan is expected to hold further talks with Biden at the meeting on the purchase of F-16 fighters.

Seems like big NATO developments. Ukraine officially out until further notice. Zelensky big mad.

Biden skipping the NATO leader dinner tonight, that Zelensky is attending. His team cites his busy schedule. Maybe they scared of Zelensky being pissed about not being let in.

A US official blamed the 80-year-old president's busy schedule over four days and said he's preparing for a 'big speech' on Wednesday when asked why he wasn't attending.

Biden, who has only been in Europe since Sunday night and went to the beach on Saturday, had Secretary of State Antony Blinken attend instead.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his wife Olena led the dignitaries on the first night of the summit in Vilnius.

Biden during the time cited by his team:

I hadn't even thought of that. I can't see Russia ever invading Kazakhstan to assimilate their non-slavic young people into Mother Russia to boost the ebbing population.
We obviously don’t know what is going on in the Kremlin’s mind, but I and people who believe that Russia would invade Kazakhstan, thought they would just bite off the north, where ethnic Russians would not resist.

I also didn’t expect that Russia would go after the entirety of Ukraine either though, so…

NATO summit: Allies refuse to give Ukraine timeframe on joining

_130353396_8335560c350fb996358d7e060a4ac394da6e33510_0_3800_25331000x667.jpg.webp

Nato states have said Ukraine can join the military alliance "when allies agree and conditions are met" after President Volodymyr Zelensky criticised the "absurd" delay to accession.

In a communique, Nato said it recognised the need to move faster but would not be drawn on a timeframe.

Earlier Mr Zelensky said there seemed to be "no readiness" to invite Ukraine to Nato or make it a member.

He is now in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius, where the summit is happening.

Kyiv accepts it cannot join Nato while it is at war with Russia but wants to join as soon as possible after fighting ends.

But Mr Zelensky, tweeting before Mr Stoltenberg's comments, said that the lack of an agreed timeframe meant his country's eventual membership could become a bargaining chip.

"A window of opportunity is being left to bargain Ukraine's membership in Nato in negotiations with Russia. Uncertainty is weakness," he said.

Nato might not have said when and how Ukraine might join the alliance. But diplomats emphasised that they had set out a clearer path to membership, and the onerous application process had been shortened significantly.

The alliance had recognised Ukraine's army was increasingly "interoperable" and more "politically integrated" with Nato forces and it would continue to support reforms to Ukraine's democracy and security sector.

Diplomats also highlighted the creation of a new Nato-Ukraine Council, meeting on Wednesday for the first time, which will give Kyiv the right to summon meetings of the whole alliance.

But the decision to give no sense of timescale will be seen as a setback for Ukraine.

Even though such detail was always unlikely, Mr Zelensky's decision to say the absence of a timetable was "absurd" only emphasised his diplomatic failure.

Some member states fear near-automatic membership for Ukraine could give Russia an incentive to both escalate and prolong the war.

The focus now will move to what long-term security guarantees Nato members will promise Ukraine as an alternative to early membership.

In the past, Western security pledges failed to deter two Russian invasions. Nato allies hope a third round will be robust and explicit enough to persuade the Kremlin that further aggression would be too costly.

Addressing crowds in Vilnius later, Mr Zelensky said: "Nato will give Ukraine security. Ukraine will make the alliance stronger."

Mr Zelensky also presented a battle flag from the destroyed city of Bakhmut - the site of the longest, and possibly bloodiest, battle in Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The Vilnius summit comes a day after Turkey dropped its opposition to Sweden joining the military alliance.

Turkey had previously spent months blocking Sweden's application, accusing it of hosting Kurdish militants. The country will now become the alliance's 32nd member after Finland - which borders Russia, joined in April.

Both countries announced their intention to join Nato after Russia invaded Ukraine.

A series of military packages for Ukraine were also announced at the summit on Tuesday.

A coalition of 11 nations will start training Ukrainian pilots to fly US-made F-16 fighter jets at a centre to be set up in Romania in August, officials said.

In May the US gave the go-ahead for its Western allies to supply Ukraine with advanced jets, including the long sought F-16s - a significant upgrade on the Soviet-era planes it is currently using.

Ukraine had repeatedly lobbied its Western allies to provide jets to help with its recently-begun counter-offensive aiming to retake territory seized by Russia.

However experts say the training of Ukrainian pilots to fly and operate Western jets will take some time.

It is a bit false assumption that in so called North Kazahstan are living just ethnic russians.
It is russian propaganda approach that if someone knows russian then it is ethnic russian or ,," russian speaker ".

North of Kazahstan is multinational, due to industrialization and mining industry boom Nikita did a lot to fill these areas with workforce.

These nations from siberia ( they are not ethnic russians in no case ), also uzbeks, kazakhs, ukr etc etc....

Plus a lot mixed marriages products
...1/2, 1/4 and if to take in depth, might be 8 nations mix outcome.

Not likely they does want russian world, at least these who are realistic.

Kazahstan even does have businesses relocated from Belarus and Russia... and their branches etc.

Kazahstan: 0 mobilisation, 0 sanctions.
Kazahstan : trade with west and russia, China and India. 0 problems usually.

Why pragmatic ppl in Kazahstan might want prohibitions, restrictions and risk to get sent to dumbass trenches instead to make money from russia, west and east?

Ofc some % of ppl always will be degenerates easy to brainwash ....

If about ukr membership I'm sceptical.
They 30 years in row had proved that they in reality didn't homework nor for defense nor to fight vs corruption, nepotism and laziness enough....
A lof of their so called " investments in defense " were mainly on paper....
I will list damn a lot of examples how lazy they were....

Ofc russia should take their forces back to Russia....

To accept Ukr in EU or NATO for me looks not doable during next 10 years even IF russia didn't had existed.

Russia mainly does have GDP cos selling commodities for cheap etc.
Turkey is more fertile and doesn't have sanctions + damn a lot of turks living not in Turkey.
They long ago even managed to get license to produce Stinger, then BMW and Mercedes factories etc stuff....

They actually are expanding globally and semi neutral status de facto plus high number of them does help them a lot.

Btw actual real number of white slavic origin russians already most likely is lower than number of turks.

Turkey has agreed to support Swedens application For NATO membership
https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/news_217147.htm

  1. On 10 July, 2023, President Recep Tayyip Erdoǧan of Türkiye, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson of Sweden, and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met at the NATO Summit in Vilnius.
  2. Since the last NATO Summit, Sweden and Türkiye have worked closely together to address Türkiye’s legitimate security concerns. As part of that process, Sweden has amended its constitution, changed its laws, significantly expanded its counter- terrorism cooperation against the PKK, and resumed arms exports to Türkiye, all steps set out in the Trilateral Memorandum agreed in 2022.
  3. Sweden and Türkiye agree today to continue their cooperation under both the Trilateral Permanent Joint Mechanism established at the Madrid NATO Summit 2022, and under a new bilateral Security Compact that will meet annually at ministerial level and create working groups as appropriate. At the first meeting of this Security Compact, Sweden will present a roadmap as the basis of its continued fight against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations towards the full implementation of all elements of the Trilateral Memorandum, including article 4. Sweden reiterates that it will not provide support to YPG/PYD, and the organisation described as FETÖ in Türkiye.
  4. Both Sweden and Türkiye agreed that counter-terrorism cooperation is a long-term effort, which will continue beyond Sweden’s accession to NATO. Secretary General Stoltenberg also reconfirmed that NATO categorically condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. NATO will be significantly stepping up its work in this area, including by the Secretary General establishing, for the first time at NATO, the post of Special Coordinator for Counter-Terrorism.
  5. We commit to the principle that there should be no restrictions, barriers or sanctions to defence trade and investment among Allies. We will work towards eliminating such obstacles.
  6. Sweden and Türkiye have also agreed to step up economic cooperation, through the Türkiye-Sweden Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO). Both Türkiye and Sweden will look to maximise opportunities to increase bilateral trade and investments. Sweden will actively support efforts to reinvigorate Türkiye’s EU accession process, including modernisation of the EU-Türkiye Customs Union and visa liberalisation.
  7. On this basis, and given the imperatives of the deterrence and defence of the Euro- Atlantic area, Türkiye will transmit the Accession Protocol for Sweden to the Grand National Assembly, and work closely with the Assembly to ensure ratification

Erdogan has finaly made good on their word and submitted swedens application to join NATO for ratification by the turkish parliament.
Given that Erdogan has a tight grip on the power in the country at the momen, it would be surprising if the parliament did not vote it through. For it not to go through would mean a loss of face for Erdogan.

Then its down to hungary who previously had said that they would not block the application alone.
Although it is likely that they will drag their feet and not go through the formalities until after the new year.
