Yet a great many people who voted for Obama DID vote for Trump and this was the main reason he was elected, Obama ran on a somewhat anti establishment ticket but failed to deliver then Trump ran on the same ticket whilst the Dems ran with Hilary and now Biden.Economically, things are demonstrably better when Democrats are in charge and worse with the GOP.
Conservative politicians take victory laps on successful Democrat legislation they voted against, MGT's district is doing incredibly well DESPITE her.
No matter how the Democrats have failed to reach their promises there is NEVER a reason to vote for a Trump. People want things no politician is ever going to give them, and when a Trump promises them it's always a lie. There hasn't been a prosperous conservative president in my lifetime, and I was born in 1968. They're always a disaster. Always.
Democrats aren't great, they're only as good as the GOP forces them to be, which is an incredibly low bar. If the GOP gave a flying fuck about the people and passed bills that actually helped people, maybe the Democrats would work harder.
I would say the nature of US politics is actually much more influenced by the Dems than it is the GOP. Theres a lot of things the Dems could do which would have strong public support, most obviously a move towards socialised healthcare in some form, generally taxing the rich more to fund public spending. If the Dems pushed in that direction I believe the GOP would have to follow or become unelectable pretty quickly, thats exactly what happened in the mid 20th century were the GOP had to follow the Dems move leftwards under FDR.
I'd say the reality though is the Dems push as far to the right as they can get away with and still have a chance at winning, they do this not because the GOP forces them to but because their bought out by many of the same rich interests the GOP are.
There "role" basically is to provide an alternative to the GOP which looks like its progressive but actually suppresses progressive politics, making sure such people genuinely pushing politics can never hold a position of power even if they would be very electable.
Thats really the key to the way politics has been going across much of the western world in recent years, centralist "liberals" have suppressed progressive politics and its allowed the right to pick up the anti establishment vote. Then of course they depend purely on the threat of the right they have helped to create to get your vote.
