GAME OF THRONES Actor Pedro Pascal Lands Key Role in WONDER WOMAN 2

Director Patty Jenkins is bringing on Pedro Pascal for a key role in her “Wonder Woman” sequel starring Gal Gadot.

The “Narcos” star is on board for the follow-up to 2017’s hit, joining Kristen Wiig, who was tapped for the villain role of Cheetah. The film would mark the second time Pascal and Jenkins have worked together, having previously teamed up on the TV movie “Exposed.”

Variety first reported that Jenkins would be returning to write, direct, and produce the pic. Following the news that the studio has slated the movie for Nov. 1, 2019, finding this pivotal role became a top priority.

Plot details are still being kept under wraps, as is the character Pascal will be playing.

“Wonder Woman” has been a standout in DC’s cinematic universe, grossing $821 million worldwide, including $412 domestically. It scored with critics as well, earning a nomination from the Producers Guild as one of the best films of 2017.

Pascal gained traction in Hollywood with his scene-stealing performance as Oberyn Martell in HBO’s “Game of Thrones.” That role would lead to another star-making turn in Netflix’s drama series “Narcos.”

Following the success of both shows, Pascal has begun to make moves in the film world. He was most recently seen in Fox’s “Kingsmen: The Golden Circle” and can be seen next starring opposite Denzel Washington in Antoine Fuqua’s sequel to “The Equalizer,” which debuts July 20. This fall, he will also appear in Annapurna and Barry Jenkin’s drama “If Beale Street Could Talk.”

He is currently filming J.C. Chandor’s “Triple Frontier” alongside Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, and Garrett Hedlund in Hawaii for Netflix.

James Wan and Roy Lee Team for Stephen King's THE TOMMYKNOCKERS

The Tommyknockers could be the next Stephen King novel to get the feature treatment. James Wan, the director and producer behind The Conjuring horror movies, and Roy Lee, one of the producers behind the adaptation of King’s It, are tackling the adaptation of the writer’s 1987 science-fiction-horror novel.

The duo, who would produce via their respective banners, Atomic Monster and Vertigo, have teamed up with Larry Sanitsky, the veteran producer who executive produced the 1993 television miniseries adaptation of Tommyknockers.

The package hit studios and digital streamers such as Netflix on Thursday, ahead of the Easter and Passover holiday weekend.

“It is an allegorical tale of addiction (Stephen was struggling with his own at the time), the threat of nuclear power, the danger of mass hysteria and the absurdity of technical evolution run amuck. All are as relevant today as the day the novel was written. It is also a tale about the eternal power of love and the grace of redemption,” wrote Sanitsky, who holds the screen rights, in a mission statement sent to prospective buyers and obtained by THR.

The project is expected to garner keen interest thanks to several factors. The book is the second-best-selling King book of all time in its initial hard cover release and outsold such King classics as It, The Shining and Carrie. And there is already a hungry appetite for the author's material thanks to the success of It, New Line’s adaptation that proved to be a surprise hit when it grossed $700 million worldwide.

The story follows a town in Maine that falls under the influence of a dangerous gas from an unearthed space craft. The gas begins to transform the people, giving them enhanced abilities, but also making them violent and subject to an alien hive mentality. One man, thanks to a steel plate in his head, is immune to the effects and tries to stop the townspeople.

The ABC miniseries, starring Jimmy Smits and Marg Helgenberger, was a massive ratings hit. In 2013, NBC announced it would make another adaptation but those plans never came to fruition.

Scarlett Johansson to Star in Taika Waititi's World War II Film JOJO RABBIT

Scarlett Johansson is climbing aboard director Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok follow-up, a movie set in Nazi-era Germany.

The Rough Night actress is in final negotiations to star in Jojo Rabbit, a satirical film centering on a 10-year-old boy figuring out how to fit in in an increasingly fascistic Germany and creating an imaginary friend as a result. Johansson will play his mother, who doesn't understand her child and the challenges he's facing.

Waititi, who wrote the script, is producing alongside Carthew Neal and Chelsea Winstanley for Fox Searchlight. Production is expected to begin in the spring.

Johansson, who is currently starring in Wes Anderson's Isle of Dogs, is, like Waititi, a Marvel alum, having acted in multiple films for the comics house as Natasha Romanoff, alias Black Widow. She is set to star in an upcoming and long-awaited stand-alone film for the character, with a script penned by Jac Schaeffer.

First Look and Details at Pixar's Short Film BAO, to Debut with INCREDIBLES 2

Incredibles 2 may be the main course this summer, but audiences will absolutely adore the appetizer.

Before Elastigirl saves her family, another mom tends to a different kind of baby in Pixar’s new short film, Bao, debuting in front of the animated superhero sequel on June 15. The seven-and-a-half-minute short is a culinary fable about a Chinese-Canadian woman suffering from the depression of an empty nest, who gets a second shot at motherhood when one of her handmade dumplings comes alive.

Domee Shi, a storyboard artist who, with Bao, becomes Pixar’s first female short director in the studio’s history, was inspired to write and tell a story flavored by her upbringing as the only child to Chinese immigrants. “Often times it felt like my mom would treat me like a precious little dumpling, wanting to make sure I was safe, that I didn’t go out late, all that stuff,” Shi tells EW. “I just wanted to create this magical, modern-day fairy tale, kind of like a Chinese Gingerbread Man story. The word ‘bao’ actually means two things in Chinese: Said one way, it means steamed bun. Said another, it means something precious. A treasure.”

The double meaning works wonders, as Bao tracks the lengths a mother will go to protect her child, even as she watches her sweet baby grow sour. (“What is puberty for a dumpling?” Shi opines. The answer: sesame seeds.) It’s purely coincidental that the coming-of-dough short ended up slated to run in front of Incredibles 2, but it’s no accident that Bao feels so personal and familial. When word of the story got around Pixar after Shi presented concept images at a studio-wide meeting, employees with Asian and immigrant parents contacted Shi and producer Becky Neiman-Cobb, eager to work on the film (a mirror of what happened with last year’s Mexico-feting Coco, which received similar enthusiasm from Pixar’s Latinx community). “It felt like a really universally appealing story that a lot of people could identify with,” says Shi. “We got a ton of e-mails from people identifying with the mom character, or the dumpling character, saying, ‘Wait, that’s me,’ or ‘That’s my parents,’ or ‘I’m dealing with this right now.’”

Another willing volunteer: Shi’s mother, Ningsha Zhong — a “dumpling master,” her daughter raves — served as a cultural consultant and gave the crew two close-up, hands-on dumpling-making demos which the animators studied intimately. “Our technical directors and special effects team put the camera super close to her hands and recorded every single little detail of how she folded the dough, how she cut each piece, how she rolled each wrapper into that perfect little bun shape,” Shi recalls. “We [basically] recreated those shots with her hands and used them as the reference for animation.”

It’s also what’s on the inside that counts. While the exterior design of Dumpling was an exercise in adorable (see: the exclusive concept art above), crew members who also worked on 2007’s Ratatouille warned the Bao team that designing food would be no cakewalk. “You know Pixar and you know the special effects we can pull off here: explosions and water and splashes and fire and fireworks,” says Neiman-Cobb. “One of the biggest challenges, and what brought our effects department to their knees, was Dumpling’s pork filling. That was hard. We learned there’s a very fine line between looking delicious and appetizing and looking wrong or gross. Making our food look delicious was a big triumph.”

One could argue that perhaps the filmmakers even did their job too well. “We did a lot of ‘research’ and ate so many buns,” Shi says, “and as soon as I felt like I couldn’t eat another dumpling, I would go to a Bao review, watch a shot of the dumplings being made, and be like, ‘Oh my God… I’m hungry again.’”
