Yes, I'm talking about Commodore Matthew Perry that in 1853 brought two war ships to Edo Bay and forced the shogunate at gunpoint to renounce its own policy of isolationism and sign trade treaties highly favorable to the US, leading to the end of the Tokugawa shogunate that had ruled Japan for 200 years and the Meiji restoration that set the foundation for modern Japan.
