MMA journalist Kevin Iole put out his MMA pound for pound list for Yahoo Sports recently. I know these lists are very subjective (and many Sherbros think they are quite useless), and each lists weighs different criteria differently. Still, I’m not sure how he came to the conclusion with Pena as #1. Based on any of the common criteria’s used (champion status, strength of schedule, wins, record etc) still can’t see how he came up with that conclusion. Off the top of my head, I can’t see Pena in the top 10 p4p currently with fighters like Zhang, Cyborg, Valentina and Grasso active.

He also dropped Israel out of the top 10.

Here’s his list:

1. Jon Jones (27-1), UFC heavyweight champion. Previous Ranking: 1.

2. Islam Makhachev (25-1), UFC lightweight champion. Previous Ranking: 2.

3. Alexander Volkanovski (25-3), UFC featherweight champion. Previous Ranking: 3.

4. Leon Edwards (21-3), UFC welterweight champion. Previous Ranking: 4.

5. Khamzat Chimaev (13-0), UFC middleweight contender. Previous Ranking: 5.

6. Sean O’Malley (17-1), UFC bantamweight champion. Previous Ranking: 6.

7. Charles Oliveira (33-9), former UFC lightweight champion. Previous Ranking: 7.

8. Kamaru Usman (20-4), former UFC welterweight champion. Previous Ranking: 8.

9. Justin Gaethje (25-4), UFC lightweight contender. Previous Ranking: 9.

10. Alex Pereira (9-2), UFC light heavyweight champion. Previous Ranking: NR.

Women’s MMA pound-for-pound rankings as of Nov. 27

1. Julianna Peña (12-5), UFC bantamweight contender. Previous Ranking: 1.

4. Zhang Weili (24-3), UFC strawweight champion. Previous Ranking: 4.

5. Cris "Cyborg" Justino (27-2), Bellator featherweight champion. Previous Ranking: 5.

6. Erin Blanchfield (11-1), UFC flyweight contender. Previous Ranking: 6.

Jon Jones #1 is just as bad if not worse

2019 razor close fight with Santos
2020 should've lost the decision to Reyes
2023 outgrappled French Kickboxer who's career best win is Volkov
Man… I don’t know if I can say it’s just as bad as Pena being #1… based on any criteria used, there’s still at least a plausible argument for Jones being high on the list.. can’t see how Pena can be above current champs.

Jones at 1 is pretty silly too. The guy's had 1 fight in almost 4 years, and before that was a couple razor thin decisions over decent but not great competition.

I guess going 1-1 against Nunes was his reasoning, but yeah Grasso should be #1

Pena is 3-3 since 2017, Jones is 5-0.
Pena lost her latest fight, Jones became HW champ.

You can argue that Jones isn't #1 p4p - but you can't argue that it's just as bad or worse than Pena.
Pena went 1-1 with Nunes. Jones should be 2-1 since 2019. 1-1 against Nunes is better than anything Jones has accomplished in recent times

Whatever though, neither should be even top 5 at this point.

Absolute shit list.

Imagine putting Justin Gaethje and Khamzat Chimaev (dudes who have never even made Champion) over Alex Pereira — a fighter who has beaten 4 current (or former) World Champions in this year alone.

A guy who has become a 2-division World Champion this year.

Fucking ass hat list.

I think I'm going to become a podcaster this year, just to give a tremendous boot-in-the-ass to fogging idiots like this.

You are right. Winning a razor close decision in 2019 against Santos, getting gifted the decision against Reyes in 2020, and waiting for the champion to leave before taking a favorable matchup at HW is better than finishing Nunes

Julianna Pena is #3 p4p at best.

Iole is just a horned up sleazeball, no way you can legit claim Pena as P4P #1 solely off her fluky win over Nunes & ignoring the rematch as well as the time she got submitted by a kickboxer.

Twice, actually. She got submitted twice by kickboxers. And one of them didn't even have a single submission win before she choked out Pena. <45>

The most egregious thing on the women's list is Tatiana Suarez being #8. She should be way higher in my opinion.

I think he thinks Pena is Nunes... it says his previous ranking for her was #1...
