No one has ever proven it, but Michael had a bad habit of losing lots of money gambling and saying “fuck you, I’m Michael Jordan,” when it came time to pay. He most certainly retired because of the debts.

The word was that he was forced into retirement by Mafia or guys who operate like the Mafia.

Edit: I shouldn’t have said certainly because it hasn’t been proven, but that is what most believed to be the case around Chicago.
