What exercises best improve kicking and punching speed ? Or is the only method bag work / sparring ?

Short answer, yes bag work and pads is the best method for developing speed imo.

In my experience, it comes naturally with repetition. Trying to force it tends to make form suffer.

Focus on good technique and put in the time.

Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. like @isor said focus on good technique and just put the reps in. ''speed'' is really just efficiency of the movement hence why people say to ''whip'' the punch, it helps the kinetic chain move the force more efficiently

It’s all about form. Trying to go fast will only make you look sloppy

Speed comes with relaxation.
Relaxation comes with confidence.
Confidence comes with experience.
Experience come with training.

Just train.

Too fast for the naked eye to see.

Legend has it Speedboy won...........via rapid slap to the face, Spacetime has lived in denial ever since........there is talk of a trilogy in the making, with Payak to fight the winner, if he hasn't caught HIV from a lady boy and died......

Either way it was a cheap ppv. Not expensive at all

repetition of proper form and technique.

One may peruse relevant literature on the matter...

Visualization and belief are key to speed IMO. Using proper form, pretend ur arms are snakes and strike as quickly as possible. Visualize a race car and how fast they zoom by while shadow boxing with proper form, just BE fast without compromising technique.

For ur jab, pretend ur target is a Guru that wants you to steal the dollar bill out of his hand before he moves it out the way. Pretend its a 100 dollar bill so there's more incentive lol. Try to do as little telegraphing as possible and snap at the target with the most speed u can.

^ This. Being fast is so much more a mindset than a genetic gift. Don't get me wrong, not everyone is a Roy Jones Jr, but more people can access that type of speed than know it. And the more you train being fast, the more you'll be used to being fast and the faster you'll be. A little cheat is to sharpen and speed up your exhaling as you throw strikes, and your pace and punches will follow suit.

Incorporating sprints into my training helped build fast twitch muscle as well, or at the very least gets you in excellent shape and again contributes to the above "Speed Mindset"
