I am thinking about different ways the cage affects striking.

If you are against cage, and opponent throws straight or jab, and you slip it, wont his punch end up hitting the wall? Have you even seen this happen? When throwing for power you aim for back of head. A cage or wall seems like a deterrent to striking for max power.

Sometimes I see both in clinch and each have one side pressed against wall or cage. If you overshoot your hook, then you also might hit the wall. And you wont be able to throw the hooks from side touching the cage or wall. Also cannot throw low kick from the side against the cage.

In boxing, you have ropes only, so you dont worry about accidently hitting something harder than your bones. But even in boxing, when you are in the corner there is certain way of fighting. There are even some specialist who do most of their work in the corners because it is a different kind of game. I think we ought to see talk about MMA in the same light. Please add what you will.

Lol wtf. You aren't going to be standing with your head flush against the wall. Even with your back against a wall your head is still a foot away from the wall

Is hitting a cage fence even a concern with 4oz gloves on? Or are you talking about street fighting? Hitting a wall is obviously a different story but the ringposts are padded and you have gloves on.

Not on purpose, but I am thinking if opponent shoves you into cage or wall, then tries to punch you real quick, and then you quickly duck, his fist goes into the cage.

edit:

CAn that actually become a tactic then? To stand flush against the wall/cage, so opponent will be hesitant to throw fearing he might hit the wall/cage

How hard is the cafe fence? CAnt your fingers at least still get scraped?

Lol no it's a bad tatic. Because if you actually get punched your back of the head is hitting the wall. It's why in mma you aren't supposed to have your head flush against the canvas if you're on bottom

there are a few reasons but this is legit

Where do people come up with this stuff...

More stupefyingly unimportant wisdom from the master.

LOL!

It's almost like these questions come from someone who watches endless UFC clips in his basement while referencing a McDojo manual on striking, not actual experience.

Good 1!

Let's see if he can resist rising to the bait?

Were you drunk when you came up with this? Professional fighters are gonna be worried about scraping their fingers?

If the cage was hard at all you'd see guys slamming each other into it. Also, if it was actually somehow a concern to hit the cage guys would go to the body instead, or just clinch. Anyone who's ever been in a cage or even seen one MMA fight should know this makes no sense.

I think the cage affects striking in different ways than you think. For instance, the shape and size of the cage affects the footwork and ranges that striking take place. You saw pure strikers like CroCop do really well in a pride ring where he can use similar footwork to corner his opponents, but struggle in the UFC where they could constantly circle away from him. In the ufc, you saw the rise of either karate style footwork, or explosive athletic type darts and dragging rear foots type strikes to cover bigger distances.

This idea that you punch to the back of the head for power is a bit misguided. This type of visualization will leave you unbalanced. Power punches is less about the strike pushing through, but the body transferring more weight more forcibly. So you often hear the concept of a boxer sitting down on the punch. They are simply more rooted. The ranges ideally between a speedy type of punch and a power punch should be the same. Hope this helps.

Yeah, but what about scraping their backs? Imagine this but on their backs instead!:eek::eek::eek::eek:
