why are you still lifting the week of the fight? you're not gaining any strength at that point. The last week do like 70–75% on the lifts for a few sets
Its individual. Most would stop lifting anything decent 2-4 out. Ammy would depend on how often you are fighting and what level ammy. I would personally consider doing a deload 2 weeks out and not lift the week of the figth, but that's theoretical.assuming weight cut is not an issue, how far out do you cut the heavy weights and focus on conditioning?
edit: this is for amateur mma
Different coaches have different philosophies. Doing 2-3 sets at 70-75% sets so that you do not lose strength is not going to detract from anything or overtrain you and takes about 10 minutes to do.why are you still lifting the week of the fight? you're not gaining any strength at that point.
I remember my muay thai coach would even have us stop doing pushups 4 days out.
I know you're experiencedIdeally If you are an ammy who started as an adult you should not be lifting at all because your technical level is low so all should be put into that.
But all pros and international level ammys stopped around 2 to 3 weeks at my gym
I know you're experienced
and I know this board over emphasizes strength
but I disagree with your comment that an amateur should not be lifting at all. There is diminishing returns with everything but a base level of strength training provides huge benefits.
I would actually support what @Cole train said. You're much better off doing roadwork, working on your flexibility and even cross training for skills rather than heavy lifting for fighting at amateur level. It also depends on the weight class of course, maybe heavy lifting makes sense for a heavyweight for instance.I know you're experienced

Your peak comes about a week after completion of your rest week. This way you are still fresh from your rest week, but physically primed from a few days of training without it being enough to become too tired yet.Its individual. BJJ comps I just line it up on a deload week if possible dependinding on the level.
We are talking about lifting here only for a fighter. You wont lose strength in 2 weeks and may still have a cut plus your last hard sparring/ conditioning sessions.Your peak comes about a week after completion of your rest week. This is for ammy fighters. In theory you should be fighting pretty regularly and would never really get a "proper camp" in. I know we see people run full camps as an ammy these days, but personally it would make more sense to me for an ammy to basically fight every 6-12 weeks, train around 80% all the time and focus on getting experience. Sure you might lose occasionally, but that's what ammy MMA is for.Heavy lifting is for in between camp, or the first part of the training camp.
