I've heard that different instructors emphasize different things. Could someone elaborate on exactly how they differ?

There's just punches and movement involved so is there really that much room for variation?

Footwork
different styles of defense
lanky v stocky
set ups
pressure v off the back
pocket
etc.

Its not different from any combat sport. Everyone has preferences and styles, even in the same discipline.

eg. Boxing is boxing, but Russian boxing is different from American boxing.

It's like sex. Sex is just inserting the tab into the slot, but if you watch porn movies, and I'm sure you do, you'll see that there's countless ways to do it.

But they do teach all of it?

Do you guys think I could train in a mixed group - intermediate/avanced if I have 3 years of mitts training and some KB sparring. The beginner schedule wont work if I get a 9-5 job

My school is so subpar and I'm so flat footed in sparring that TKD makes no sense for me. I can outpunch a 5th Dan by simply emulating how boxers move and working my speedy jab, so I think some of my innate skills translate to boxing. But I can't throw proper kicking combos even after 3 years... Just too heavy legs and not enough flexibility

What you need to do is to get a private trainer. The way you're going at it will never work.

If you settle for a meathead trainer I will LOL

You find which coach ticks off most of the criteria for you, and then you train according to the opponent you'll face. Rarely do you cover every aspect of fighting all year round.

Similar to MMA if you're a BJJ guy going against a striker, you focus on X. If you're set to fight a wrestler, you focus on Y. It always changes.

Cross training is what alot do as well if they feel there's holes in their game they need to address. Its not permanent, could be if you really click with that other gym. Think of it like having a wife and a side chick

It's not very good to go from instructor to instructor when you are on a beginner or intermediate level. It is pretty good for advanced guys though

If you have to ask the answer is no.
