What do you think is the reason UFC became the top dog?

Luck?
Ruthless aggression?
Marketing?

how did the UFC end up dominating the fight game with all the top stars?

It was run by a super rich and influential mob like family.

Pride was the only one who could challenge them as they were literally run by the Yakuza lol.

Saudi could also, if they can be bothered to do it. One of the richest gangs in the world.

obviously

Interestingly enough though, the single most important entity which made the UFC mainstream was The Ultimate Fighter Show. A show Dana White was strongly against doing.
And it came on right after Monday Night Raw which was still bering watched by 4 million 18-49 year old males at the time.

Not to downplay their accomplishments, but , a lot of it was right place right time

Through some incredibly dodgy manoeuvres and paying their fighters fuck all helps I'm sure

rode forrest griffin and stephan bonnar's coattails.

SEG's UFC was run into the ground (no thanks to the Fertittas), and then Zuffa purchased them for peanuts, invested money in making it bigger via marketing. Dana was installed into a power position he excelled in. Through consolidation via getting the best fighters and purchasing all competitors, they became the only show in town.

Now, many years later, MMA is synonymous with UFC, and there is a huge fund behind them. It worked. They managed to turn cage-fighting into a sport. Just look at when ESPN actually talks about it... it's almost a goof. No matter, it's difficult to gain headway, even if you're able to get what would be considered top ten fighters, because it isn't UFC. The promotion is bigger than the fighters, no matter what money backers come around.

In hindsight, Pride being run by shifty and shady people, Strikeforce backers wanting to get out, and Bellator getting purchased and then ruined, was the end of any possibility of competition. We don't even see top fighters trying to put together a 1-1 promotion with whatever money, shady or not, is out there. Everyone is beaten down (except Francis).

It's funny when Dana makes it seem like he started from nothing when he had a billionaire friend buy the company.

Not to say he isn't responsible for where the company is at today. But not everyone has a rich friend willing to buy a business.
