Just looking back at his record, how did he earn himself a title shot?

3 Decisions and a KO over a nobody.

He was not worthy of challenging the GOAT.

It's been years, but I think there just wasn't anyone else that deserved a title shot at that moment in time.

Getting a title shot isn't just about "earning it", it's also about being the best person available.

Swick was primed and ready for a title shot (4-0@ww, 9-1 in UFC) and Hardy beat him

Beat Mike Swick who was fighting Martin Kampmann for the number 1 contenders match up till Kampmann got injured. Dan filled in as a replacement for Kampmann and beat Swick.

Lets see beat gono was a pride star with a good win or two in ufc. Kod a guy who had 1 good ko. Beat davis who was on a good run including a win o er lytle. Then beat swick who everyone was itching to see get a title shot at the time. I remember dan wasnt supposed to win that fight lol. But he earned more then kos. Daley and fitch.

When you get dominate champs like GSP who beat all the elite challengers at the time already, you almost always get a few weak challengers while the other up and coming contenders make their way through the ranks.

Silva has a couple of them, as does mighty mouse.

He trolled the shit out of Marcus Davis. Instant title shot.

Because he was in the right place at the right time.

Because poor matchmaking created poor rankings at WW, with guys like Condit, Rory, and Hendricks going through the toughest schedules to get a title shot, while GSP wasted precious years of his career against people like Hardy and Koscheck.
GSP should have fought Condit and Hendricks much earlier.

Because MMA isn't like other sports where the best face off, even if they "already" faced each other.
Imagine, Federer and Nadal "already played each other", so let's have Dan Hardy face the defending champ instead.

He's British and he had a red mohawk, duh.

GSP was coming off of wins over...

Koscheck, Hughes, Serra, Fitch, Penn, and Alves.

There weren't any other real options at that point. As evidenced by Koscheck getting another TS after Hardy.

WW used to be the most overrated division in MMA history during GSPs reign.

It's easy to forget champs used to fight more often (more than once a year, although GSP petered off after his next fight), automatic rematches were not so common and fighters fought who they were told. GSP had beaten all of the top contenders in the last few years and there was some parity among the #2-8(?). Fitch was the consensus #2 (ok not by everybody) but the beating he took from GSP gave him no reason to deserve a rematch at the time.

It was a filler fight until a better #1 contender emerged, Hardy was at the right place at the right time.

Haters gonna hate...WW had great fighters at the time (still does) it's just that GSP was miles above the rest. He beat everybody so convincingly that rematches were not warranted. Outside of Matts, only Penn gave him a fight and the rematch settled any doubt.

LOL that's the best you can come up with?
How about.
Eilers (RIP) vs AA lol
