Hmm, sounds interesting, and your recommendation bumps it up considerably higher on my watchlist. For whatever reason, I've been on an old show kick lately - I rewatched The Wire and then seeing the entire Oz cast made me want to rewatch Oz - but I've been wanting to see at least shows new to me if not brand new shows, so I have Mad Men ready to go (tried it once over a decade ago and want to try again) and now Severance is on the list, too. No idea when I'll get to it, but when I do, I'll tag you for sure.

This was Fuller's plan from the jump: He wanted the backstory "prologue" type stuff to lead into the book adaptations. But, genius that he is, he was still threading through book material even in the first two seasons, from the Clarice arc with that missing FBI agent to the animal guy Will had to take out who was a clear Red Dragon analogue. Eventually, though, Fuller was going to get to the books, and when he did, it was going to become a true adaptation. Still, though, he introduced his own twists and played with the characters and events, as well as the timeline combining prologue books with the "proper" Hannibal books---like the Will/Francis museum throwdown, which wasn't in the book but which was one of the coolest parts of the series, not to mention the sequence when Hannibal sics Francis on Will's family, which is a non-issue in both the book Red Dragon and the film Manhunter but which was done very differently in Hannibal.

Even as Fuller started to work through a specific book for a specific season, there was still plenty of originality to go around.

To clarify, you're asking me if it's worth it to watch the GOAT dramatic series?

For further clarification, are you saying that there were two episodes in Season 3 that you disliked or are you saying that you tried to watch Season 3, couldn't even make it through the first two episodes, and still haven't even seen Season 3?

Regardless of how you answer the above, though, my answer is still the same: Watch Season 3 immediately so that you can see the entirety of the GOAT dramatic series ;)
You're wrong it is a literal word for word remake. The only thing differene is they made white characters black and male characters female.

Did you actually read Red Dragon? If so, do you mind giving me a page number for where Francis throws Will out of an elevator at the museum after he eats the Blake painting? It's Chapter 41 when Francis goes to the museum if that helps you. I'll wait. And while you're looking for that scene from the show that doesn't exist in the book, you might also give me a page or chapter number for where Francis breaks into Will's family's house. And hell, while you're failing to provide me with page/chapter numbers for those scenes that don't exist in the book and that were original creations in the show, how about telling me where Will and Hannibal go on their buddy cop escapade and square off together against Francis...

The show is very far from "a literal word for word remake" of any of the books, and anyone who says different either has no idea what they're talking about and/or is trolling for some silly reason.

Dude i love the show and all things Hannibal related i guess except the books i just never read books. All i know is when i was watching i knew exactly what they were gonna say and what the scene was gonna look like. It was more graphic for sure so i guess i am the one wrong here. I kinda still don't understand why they needed to do this story a third time you have to admit it's a hard turn from the first two seasons.

Okay, we got to the bottom of that one easily enough. Since you haven't read the books and I have, trust me when I tell you: Hannibal is not a literal word for word remake of anything, neither the books nor the films. In fact, the genius of the show is evidenced, among many other places and in many other ways, in how cleverly Fuller incorporated - but always transformed - material from the larger story universe. Not only is there a ton of original material, but even material being adapted is adapted in original ways, in ways that meaningfully transform the material so that it is of a piece with the characters and the themes of the show.

All i know is when i was watching i knew exactly what they were gonna say and what the scene was gonna look like.

So your complaint is that you felt the show to be predictable? Fair enough, I guess, but I certainly didn't find it predictable. Much like how just knowing that Tarantino is probably going to tinker with historical fact after seeing Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained isn't the same as knowing how he's going to tinker with it, which is why I was on pins and needles as the Manson murders approached in Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood because I had no idea what Tarantino was going to do with that history, just knowing what happens in the books is for all intents and purposes irrelevant because I never knew what Fuller was going to do with that material for his show.

I kinda still don't understand why they needed to do this story a third time you have to admit it's a hard turn from the first two seasons.

What would you have wanted? For them to ignore the books entirely? I thought that Fuller got to brilliantly have his cake and eat it: He got to do a ton of original stuff and he got to build audience anticipation for when he got to the familiar material of the novels. And, as I've been saying, he still took an original approach to the adapted material and cleverly tinkered with it all.

Ive come to accept that if i really like a show, it will be cancelled within a season or three.

Man you are super defensive about this lol

I don't know you and you don't know me, yet you came in here and quoted one of my posts. You took it upon yourself to engage me in conversation. You started this. You came in all hot and bothered telling me that I was wrong about what I said and telling me that the show was a literal word for word remake of books you haven't even read. Don't get mad at me for challenging you to defend the things that you say. Next time, if you don't know what you're talking about, just don't talk. Don't pick fights if you're not equipped to fight.

do you even know they weren't even allowed to mention Clarice Sterling or Buffallo Bill? Oh look can strawman too!

Like I said, you're not equipped for this fight that you've picked. You asked a question - and a nonsensical question, to boot - you didn't refute a position, thus you're not strawmanning. Clearly, you don't know what that means.

Please know that nothing and no one is compelling you to keep posting in this thread. I can't say that you can quit while you're ahead, because you've never been ahead, but you can stop digging this hole that you've dug for yourself any deeper than it already is. We already established that you spoke hastily earlier. This could've been a productive conversation, but now you're flailing and projecting. We don't have to keep going. We can stop now. In fact, I'll save you the trouble of having to throw in the towel. I'll stop this from going any further. Let's just agree to disagree.

Man, you really do like Hannibal!

I really loved it back then up to season 2. It was gore-porn but so well made, so well produced, acted and written. It lost a bit of bite in season 3 and felt rushed. I was also a bit dissapointed by the gay romance shit between Hannibal and the other guy but it was still good writing.

Shame it ended that early. Fresh shit.

Because of this thread's reappearance (from the recesses of my memory, when I least expected it, like a one-armed protégé coming back to me
;)) I've decided to pull the trigger on my long anticipated Hannibal rewatch. I didn't even finish the first episode before I started saying out loud every five minutes, "This is the greatest fucking show ever." It's truly awe-inspiring, the density of the dialogue, the intricacy of the performances, the stunning visuals and sound design/music score. I'd never seen anything like it before and I still haven't seen anything like it since. And there are so many little details that I'm still noticing new shit. This time around, I didn't catch just how early Hannibal fixated on Will. In the first half of the second episode, when Will tells Hannibal that he saw Hobbs in the grave of one of the mushroom man's victims, Mads shifts his eyes off for just a beat (as he moves a million different chess pieces across his twisted chess board of a brain to see as many outcomes of as many different moves as possible) before he confirms that Will has just told him something that he didn't, and won't, tell Jack, thus strengthening their bond; then the best part is when Hannibal asks Will "Is it harder imagining the thrill somebody else feels killing now that you've done it yourself?" and Will reluctantly, even shamefully, nods his head yes, at which point Hannibal has to take a moment to gather himself and swallow as he literally starts salivating at the prospect of Will becoming his murder husband. It's analogous to Hannibal being a gay dude crushing super hard on straight boy Will and Will just confirmed that he's never done anything like this before but is open to new experiences.

This is the greatest fucking show ever.

You guys are making me happy that I skipped out on the divisive S3.

First two seasons were epic, though. And like some have already said, that S2 finale is one of the best ever of any show. I'm probably going to eventually check out S3, but I'm content with the series personally ending for me on such a high note.

If for nothing else, this series lets one of greatest actors of our time showcase his talents. Mads is the man.

The set pieces were such a highlight for me as well. Hannibal’s office was mesmerizing. It was so distracting that I was just starting at it the entire time a scene was in there.

Jack’s office, the FBI and even coroner’s. There’s no way any of that shit actually looks like that so it all had to be built. Will’s farmhouse on that acreage was also very quaint and homey.

A farmhouse on lots of land with a bunch of dogs, Will was living the dream!

Hannibal and Bedilia’s houses also suited them so well. Very dark and cold. That bold contemporary style had No warmth or welcoming feel to them at all.

Do you watch with subtitles by chance?

I feel like it helps me understand Mads tbh
I’ll use subtitles for my second run through. Lotta whispering and close proximity conversations in this show. Also some of Mad’s one liners are so damn matter of fact stated that you don’t even realize it’s a joke unless you read it
