PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN's Gore Verbinski to Direct X-Men Spinoff GAMBIT

Deadline reports that Gore Verbinski is making a deal to direct Gambit at Fox. The X-Men spinoff has been a high priority at the studio, since Channing Tatum stepped up to star in the film as Remy LeBeau, the suave mutant from New Orleans who can turn objects into projectiles. That includes a deck of cards.

Free Association’s Tatum and Reid Carolin are producing the film with X-Men overseers Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg. Josh Zetumer wrote the script. The film formerly had Doug Liman and Rupert Wyatt attached, and the character was first seen in a cameo played by in a small dose by Taylor Kitsch in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

The movie project comes as Fox has been expanding the big-screen presence of its X-Men properties, with 2018 seeing the release of New Mutants (set to open April 13), Deadpool 2 (June 1) and X-Men: Dark Phoenix (Nov. 2). Gambit currently has no release date.

Verbinski most recently directed A Cure For Wellness, but he’s adept at big scale films, having originated the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Doug Liman Exits Fox's GAMBIT to Direct Warner Bros.' JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK

Doug Liman is no longer directing Gambit. The Mr. and Mrs. Smith director has moved off Twentieth Century Fox’s X-Men spin-off, which still has Channing Tatum attached to star.

Liman is now attached to direct Justice League Dark, breathing new life into Warner Bros.' supernatural adventure project that will bring together heroes such as John Constantine, Deadman, Shade the Changing Man, Zatanna and Swamp Thing.

Insiders tell The Hollywood Reporter Fox is still intent on starting production in January and has Josh Zetumer on writing duties. A source describes the split as a “mutual parting of ways.”

A search is already underway for a new director to helm the project that tells of a New Orleans-based mutant with the power to manipulate kinetic energy and whose weapons include a staff and a deck of playing cards.

Liman signed onto the project in October 2015 after the departure of Rupert Wyatt. Gambit has seen its start date pushed several times — it was to have begun shooting in the fall of 2015, then early 2016. Script rewrites have been a recurring issue and earlier this year they pushed the start again to early 2017.

That delay left Liman to tackle another project, the small-scale psychological thriller The Wall set up at Amazon Studios, which he recently wrapped.

Producer Simon Kinberg Explains the Delay in GAMBIT Production

In an interview with /Film, producer Simon Kinberg said that the character of Gambit has a very specific tone that he wanted to make sure the film nailed, even if the process took a little longer. Here’s exactly what Kinberg had to say via /Film:

“I think the truth is when you have these movies that need a very special and unique tone, it takes a little while to find that tone…’Deadpool’ feels like it exploded out of nowhere, but it was a 10-year development process on that movie. I think it was honed over those 10 years.”

“I hope that ‘Gambit’ doesn’t take 10 years, but it takes a little honing to get that tone and that voice exactly right. The character has such a specific voice in the comic in the same way that ‘Deadpool’ has a specific voice in the comic, that we want to make sure that we capture that voice on the page. Really it’s just about getting a screenplay that is worthy of that character, and I think we’re really close right now.”

Fox Scraps GAMBIT 2016 Release Date, Announces Two Untitled Marvel Movies

After an incredibly successful box office, it's no secret that 20th Century Fox will be releasing a Deadpool sequel. Earlier tonight, Fox announced some new release dates for untitled Marvel films, and it's probably likely that one of the dates is for a Deadpool sequel.

Fox announced release dates of October 6, 2017 and January 12, 2018 for untitled Marvel films. Which one of those dates is likely for the Deadpool sequel? It's a strong possibility that a Deadpool sequel might claim the January 12, 2018 release date, because of another piece of news that Fox announced.

Gambit had originally been scheduled for release on October 7, 2016, but Fox has canceled that release date for the film. It was widely predicted that Gambit would get delayed, since the film went through a change in director and has yet to start filming. To be directed by Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) and starring Channing Tatum and Lea Seydoux, Gambit is expected to start filming in New Orleans in March of this year. The October 6, 2017 release date would seem like a realistic new release date for Gambit.

Of course, it could turn out that the two untitled Marvel projects have nothing to do withGambit or Deadpool. It's possible the release dates could be for other X-Men spinoffs like New Mutants or X-Force.

EDGE OF TOMORROW's Doug Liman to Direct GAMBIT Movie

After losing original director Rupert Wyatt and with an October 7, 2016, release looming like a hangman, Fox has furiously met with filmmakers to hop on board to direct the X-Men spin-off Gambit. The name the studio has found is a surprising one: Doug Liman.

Liman is in final negotiations to direct the comic book movie after a several rounds of meetings, including one that took place Thursday. Liman certainly knows his way around action movies. He last directed the well-regarded sci-fi action movie Edge of Tomorrow, which starred Tom Cruise. He is also known for directing Mr. & Mrs. Smith and The Bourne Identity, two massive hits, commercially and critically.

But those two movies are also famously known for having been troubled productions, with the films needing to be saved in post-production. Still, Liman has had time to mend relations. He just wrapped Mena, a 1980s drug cartel drama that reteams him with Cruise and will be distributed by Universal.

And it is believed that Simon Kinberg, who worked with Liman as the writer on Smith and has also developed into one of the town's more powerful forces, will exercise a strong hand as one of the producers. (Lauren Shuler Donner is also producing.)

Channing Tatum's GAMBIT Movie Loses Director Rupert Wyatt

Director Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) has fallen off Gambit, the Channing Tatum X-Men spinoff being made by Fox. One source told The Hollywood Reporter that a changing script caused the film's budget to be larger than expected, extending the shoot, and prompting the push. Another source said that the shooting schedule around Mardi Gras caused the reshuffling. Either way, it became a conflict for Wyatt, who had to exit.

"I was very much looking forward to working with my friend Channing and the team at Fox, but regrettably a push in the start date now conflicts with another project," said Wyatt in a statement. "I thank them for the opportunity, and I know that Gambit will make a terrific film."

Fox will move quickly to put a director in place, and they are still fully committed to the film. Tatum is starring with Lea Seydoux, who plays Bella Donna Bourdreaux. Josh Zetumer penned the script for the film, based on a treatment by Gambit co-creator Chris Claremont. Tatum, Reid Carolin, Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg are producing.

Wyatt directed the franchise reviving Rise of the Planet of the Apes and then followed with the remake of The Gambler that starred Mark Wahlberg. Gambit was scheduled to shoot down in the French Quarter in early spring and is scheduled for released on October 7, 2016.

Lea Seydoux Offered the Female Lead Role in GAMBIT Movie

Lea Seydoux has the offer to star alongside Channing Tatum in Fox’s Rupert Wyatt-directed X-Men spinoff Gambit. This was a hotly contested job for the role of Belladonna Boudreaux aka Bella. As Deadline was first to reveal, the studio had a shortlist with Seydoux, Mad Max: Fury Road's Abbey Lee and Rebecca Ferguson of Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation. They were set to test, and then Ferguson dropped out to take one of the leads in DreamWorks' adaptation of The Girl On The Train.

Now, the role in Gambit will go to Seydoux, who moved from the racy Cannes sensation Blue Is The Warmest Color to the 007 film Spectre. In X-Men lore, Bella was Gambit's love since childhood, but eventually she gained powers of her own and became head of the Assassins Guild. Gambit, aka Remy LeBeau, was head of the Thieves Guild.

Seydoux, who has been doing solid work in films like Inglourious Basterds and Midnight in Paris for years, truly broke out with a phenomenal performance in the masterful Blue Is the Warmest Color. She's been keen on mixing adult dramas like The Lobster and Saint Laurent with franchise fare like Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol throughout her career. She's just now coming off a co-starring role in the next James Bond pic Spectre. Gambit is slated for release on October 7, 2016.

Frontrunners for Female Lead Role in GAMBIT Movie Revealed

Now that Channing Tatum (Magic Mike) is officially on board to play the card-tossing mutant in 20th Century Fox's Gambit, director Rupert Wyatt needs to find Tatum a leading lady. According to Deadline, Rebecca Ferguson, Lea Seydoux, and Abbey Lee are all competing for the coveted role of Belladonna Boudreaux aka Bella.

In the comics, Bella Donna and Gambit (aka Remy LeBeau) were childhood friends, even though their families came from rival Guilds, Assassins and Thieves, respectively. As they got older a marriage was arranged between the two in hopes of uniting the Guilds. Things go sour when Bella's brother challenges Gambit to a fight to the death. Once Remy won, he got booted from New Orleans and left without Bella Donna.

Ferguson, 31, is the Swedish actress that gave a standout performance in Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation. Abbey Lee Kershaw, 28, is an Australian supermodel that has successfully transitioned into acting with a breakout role in Mad Max: Fury Road. Then there is, Lea Seydoux. The 30-year-old French actress has earned high-praise for her performances in Blue is the Warmest Color, Midnight in Paris and The Grand Budapest Hotel. She also appear in the upcoming Bond film, Spectre.

Channing Tatum Closes Deal with Fox to Star in GAMBIT

Channing Tatum has closed a deal to star in Gambit, 20th Century Fox's X-Men spin-off movie. The move, which was widely expected, contradicts reports that appeared last week suggesting the actor would exit the project after failing to come to terms with Fox. Rupert Wyatt, who directed Fox's Rise of the Planet of the Apes, will direct Gambit.

Sources say that Tatum and the studio did hit a sensitive spot in negotiations, but such back-and-forth is a normal part of top-level talent dealmaking. The Magic Mike star's participation hardly was in any real danger because the actor already had invested quite a bit in the superhero part. Tatum has been attached to the movie (loosely then officially) as both actor and producer for a few years and even made a surprise appearance at Fox's X-Men panel at Comic-Con in July.

One thing that needed figuring out was the extent of Tatum's involvement in the X-Men universe. Fox sees Tatum's Gambit, a mutant who harnesses kinetic energy, as one of the anchor characters of the X-universe, akin to Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, someone who would anchor his own movies and appear in numerous others. It's a commitment that could theoretically last more than a decade. Sources say that backend compensation was also a sticking point.

GAMBIT Movie in Jeopardy as Channing Tatum Deal Unravels

Channing Tatum's Gambit deal is in jeopardy of falling apart and he is planning to exit the comic book project at 20th Century Fox, an individual with knowledge of the situation has told TheWrap. The studio had been in the process of testing young actresses to star alongside Tatum, including Lea Seydoux, but insiders suggest that director Rupert Wyatt will soon have to find a new leading man.

It is unclear whether Tatum and his producing partner Reid Carolin plan to remain involved in a producing capacity, or whether Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner will move forward on their own. One individual close to the project told TheWrap that Tatum's reps are still in active discussions with the studio but acknowledged that "something is up." The situation will have to be resolved quickly, as Gambit is slated for release on Oct. 7, 2016.

Tatum recently appeared at Comic Con to hype his turn as New Orleans thief Remy LeBeau, aka Gambit. The character was originally played by Taylor Kitsch in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Gambit has long been a passion project for Tatum, whose attachment encouraged 20th Century Fox to ramp up production. However, Tatum also has larger ambitions, which may play a role in the current situation.

In a recent Grantland profile, Carolin said that he and Tatum are planning to make their directorial debut soon, so it's possible that the star's desire to segue behind the camera is factoring into his decision. He's also slated to star in 23 Jump Street for Sony.

Channing Tatum Gives Stan Lee an Assist at Comic-Con

At the end of Fox's panel on Saturday at the San Diego Comic-Con, Stan Lee made a surprise appearance to take a photo of all the superhero actors - from Deadpool, Fantastic Four, and X-Men: Apocalypse - on stage. However, Channing Tatum then showed up much to the delight on the 7000 strong crowd, and moderator Chris Hardwick proceeded to take an epic selfie of the many actors.

A video has now gone viral of what happened when the whole thing was over though. As you can see, the 92 year old creator of the X-Men struggles to leave the stage, and while the rest of the actors all start heading off the other way, Gambit star Channing Tatum leaps into action to help Stan out (while a critical mass of actual Marvel heroes don't even notice that their creator could use a hand.).

Rupert Wyatt to Direct GAMBIT Starring Channing Tatum

20th Century Fox's Gambit, starring Channing Tatum as the titular Cajun mutant, has finally found its director: EW can exclusively reveal that Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) will helm the mutant movie.

While the character of Gambit, a.k.a. Remy LeBeau, appeared in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine and was played by Taylor Kitsch (True Detective), this will be the comic-book fan-favorite's first solo outing. Gambit, who eventually becomes part of the X-Men team in the comics, has the ability to charge objects with energy (his favorite being playing cards), rendering them explosive.

Tatum is producing the film along with Reid Carolin, Lauren Schuler Donner, and Simon Kinberg, and it's scheduled for release on Oct. 7, 2016.

Wyatt first gained notice with his 2008 film The Escapist before helming the pleasantly surprising Apes reboot. Last year he turned his attention to crime drama territory in the Mark Wahlberg-fronted remake The Gambler to somewhat ho-hum results, but he's certainly proved capable of infusing blockbuster material with smarts and humanity, so he seems like a solid fit for Gambit.

Fox Announces October 7, 2016 Release for GAMBIT Movie

Fox has just announced that a Gambit movie will be released on October 7, 2016. Channing Tatum has previously been tied to the role of Gambit, and the actor confirmed his role in the film via Twitter after Fox's announcement. Tatum tweeted, "How do you say October 7, 2016 in Cajun?"

First debuting in Uncanny X-Men #266, Gambit was a professional thief when he first joined the group. His mutant ability allows him to mentally create and control pure kinetic energy. A kinetically charged cards which he hurls as explosive projectiles is often his weapon of choice. Gambit previously appeared in the 2009 film, X-Men Origins: Wolverine and was previously portrayed by actor Taylor Kitsch.

Previous reports have indicated that Robocop screenwriter Josh Zetumer will be writing the script for the Gambit spinoff film. The script will reportedly be based on a treatment by legendary X-Men comic book writer Chris Claremont, who created Gambit along with artist Jim Lee.

GAMBIT Gets a New Writer; Channing Tatum Officially to Star

In a move that makes official that the X-Men character Gambit is getting his own spinoff movie with Channing Tatum as the card-savvy protagonist, Fox has set Robocop scribe Josh Zetumer to write the screenplay. The studio has officially attached Tatum as star, and to produce with his Free Association partner Reid Carolin, The Donners Company's Lauren Shuler Donner, and Genre Films' Simon Kinberg.

The screenplay will be based on a treatment penned by legendary Marvel Comics writer Chris Claremont, who with Jim Lee created the character for Marvel in 1990. The storyline is being kept under wraps. The character, which also goes by the name Remy LeBeau, has the ability to charge matter with volatile kinetic energy, causing the object in question to explosively release its charge on impact. The character materialized in a short burst in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Tatum and Carolin are currently producing Magic Mike XXL, which was written by Carolin, with Tatum once again starring. Tatum will next be seen starring in Bennett Miller's Foxcatcher, and he has a headlock on Oscar buzz for his role as Olympic champion wrestler Mark Schultz since that film premiered at Cannes.

Channing Tatum Wants to Redefine Genre with GAMBIT Movie

Although Channing Tatum has yet to be officially announced in the role (nor has any casting been declared), he is thinking big for his first appearance as Gambit in Fox's X-Men franchise. A quick appearance in an ensemble piece is not for him. Instead, he wants to redefine the entire superhero genre.

"We've talked about it being a stand-alone [movie] first," Tatum said to MTV, adding that he hoped that the movie could "change the hero, superhero movie [dynamic]." The reason for that, Tatum suggested, was simple: The character isn't exactly Captain America. "Gambit is not your typical hero," he said. "He's a thief. He walks on the gray."

Ideally, Tatum said, he could launch Gambit as a solo character before "ultimately feather[ing] into the other ones" in the franchise, although he admitted that "the machine of the Marvel world is so ginormous that it's literally like climbing a mountain getting one of these movies made." Nonetheless, he said that "it's a weird, pinching-myself moment that we're even having the conversation."

Channing Tatum Confirmed to Play GAMBIT in X-MEN Spinoff

Channing Tatum has signed on to star in an X-Men spinoff centered on the character Gambit, THR has confirmed. News that the 22 Jump Street star would tackle the role last played by Taylor Kitsch broke when X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner revealed the move to Total Film on the red carpet in London Monday night, where the current X-Men movie, Days of Future Past, was premiering.

Multiple sources say that Tatum will get a stand-alone spinoff, with his version of Gambit being introduced in X-Men: Apocalypse. The stand-alone film is still in development, however, and no director has been attached. The news that one of Hollywood's most in-demand stars is joining the franchise offers a relief to the X-Men team. Director Bryan Singer previously teased that he was planning on bringing Gambit (and Nightcrawler) into the fold for X-Men: Apocalypse in 2016, so expect to hear even more details on Tatum's casting as they enter negotiations.

When asked if there were other X-Men stories she's itching to tell, Donner simply said "yeah," but couldn't reveal further details except to hint that one secret film was in the works. "There's one I'm really itching to tell you about but I can't," she told THR Saturday night. "You're gonna like it though. I guarantee you. It's really different, but you're going to like it."

Channing Tatum Has Met with X-MEN Producer for GAMBIT Role

Channing Tatum revealed that he has indeed met about playing Gambit in a potential X-Men spinoff film, expressing his love for the character and willingness to tackle the role. He also provided an update on Magic Mike 2, saying the sequel won't be as darkly dramatic as Soderbergh's first film and that he expects the entire cast to return. While speaking with MTV, Tatum revealed that he has met with X-Men producer Lauren Schuler Donner about possibly playing Gambit in an X-Men movie:

“I met with Lauren Schuler Donner. I would love—Gambit’s my really only X-Men that I’ve ever loved. I [mean] I’ve loved them all, they’re all great, [but] I don’t know I guess just being from down south—my dad’s from Louisiana and I’m from Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida—I don’t know I just related to him. He’s just kind of a suave; he’s the most un-X-Men X-Man who’s ever been in X-Men, other than maybe Wolverine. He’s kind of like the anti-hero; he’s a thief. He’s not even like a hero, he’s kind of walking the line of grey. He loves women and drinking and smoking, he’s just a cool guy that happens to have a good moral center.”

Channing Tatum Wants to Play Gambit in Future X-MEN Movies

It seems that every actor under the sun lately wants to play a comic book superhero… and Channing Tatum is no exception as he reveals he'd love to play X-Men's Gambit.

In an interview with Total Film, Channing Tatum revealed that he'd love to star in an X-Men movie… preferably as the Louisiana Lothario..

"I would like to play Gambit," he said. "Gambit's my favourite because I'm from New Orleans and around that area… my dad's from New Orleans and I'd like to do the Cajun accent and like, do it for real."

Obviously not enamoured with Taylor Kitsch's take on the Cajun trickster, Tatum is quick to add that he seems to know the character better… and appreciates the more ambiguous nature of the classic X-Men character.

"No knock on Taylor Kitsch," he added with a sense of restraint. "Because I actually like his Gambit but I have always lived around the Cajun people and I would have liked to have seen a little… you know, Gambit was always like a woman-loving, cigarette-smoking, drinking like… he was the punk-rock of superheroes. He was a thief - he rode the line."
