I'd say there's more to life than those surface details. There's the nitty gritty of daily life you don't see, like what positive influences they have, friendships etc...what psychologists call resilience factors. Even domestic violence can have different details, eg whether the kid is made to feel at fault for it or not. A clear difference between young Max and young Sean is that they both looked to their grandparents for support and Sean's grandpa was a neonazi.
