Did the Gracie Challenge backfire on the Gracies? Helio lost to Kimura, Gracie students lost to Fadda students, Helio got kick KOed by Santana and then never wanted a striking match again, etc.

Gracie: most overrated name in MMA.

Like that neighbourhood kid who is a couple years older than everyone else and can beat everybody up. Until everyone grew up.

In mma no
In bjj hell no lol they must own about 1000 academis worldwide
They are a really successful family

Not really. The point was for them to get their name out there and become rich. I'm not a huge fan but damn if it didn't work.

MMA has evolved..Gracie BJJ is merely a prototype now...

BJJ has evolved too. In time it won't (or may not) be "BJJ". The same as how Judo/JJ evolved.

10th planet. Some unorthodox teachers. Whatever works, right babe?

It was a marketing campaign, which was obviously MASSIVELY successful. The actual outcomes clearly didn't matter much in the end.

They got their name out there and made shit tons of money. They did well...

Silly question. Of course not. Name a more sucessful family in combat sports

It could be reasonably argued that the efforts of the Gracies provided the biggest leap forward in combat sports history.

Plus, most of the first/second and even the third generation are fairly wealthy.

I'm thinking they did just fine.

I think it was pretty successful lol. You got mcdojo owners who are loosely affiliated with the Gracies legally changing their name to use it lol.

Nah, they beat up plenty of mcdojo blackbelts exposing the vast majority of TMAs as frauds.

Good for them. Also Royce beat 2 roided out beasts in Shammy and Kimo, even though they aren't skilled. That takes massive balls and skills.

Eh the army brought Gracie's back in 2009 at fort Jackson and the Gracie's tried showing us how 'effective' bjj was no matter how big your opponent was.. well one staff Srgt volunteered .. he was 5'6 200 lbs ripped and on the juice .. well they started with the Gracie on the bottom, caught him in a arm bar and the Srgt ( while chewing dip) lifted him up with one arm and slammed him on the ground and took side control lol .. they tried again with a bigger Gracie so another staff Srgt volunteered .. he was 6'5 250 lb red neck .. started on the ground then he got caught in a triangle ... the Srgt ended up pretty much powerbombing him lol .. after being humbled a bit= they went on with their lesson and it was a good one I will say .. but the army decided it wasn't worth investing much in it..

Is there a source for this?

The Gracie challenge was massively successful.

Even if they didn't win every fight, they were the only ones out there that were willing to regularly test their fighting style in real no holds barred combat. So not only did it get their name out there, but it won them tons of respect.

Also it reintroduced the world to NHB fighting. Without them and their Gracie challenge there would be no UFC or MMA.

The Gracie challenge was not only about winning either. They did have a strong desire to learn and improve, and they needed to fight the best in order to do that. Back in the day, the Gracies were very good at adapting and evolving their technique. IMO it's been their one fatal flaw that they stopped adapting around the turn of the century. It's allowed the game to pass them by.

We need to appreciate what they did accomplish though. It far surpassed what any other person or family has accomplished.
