Chinese woman offered refund after facial recognition allows colleague to unlock iPhone X

It's pretty astounding how, because it's east Asian persons, there are basically no rules on making shitty jokes about how they all look the same. Even from the board liberals. And this is the same board that will shamelessly commodify the model minority status to complain on East Asians' behalf about how they are the target of disparate treatment as a white surrogate to rail against black and Latinos.

The facial recognition and fingerprint scanner are mostly a gimmick.

This is my understanding as well: that the quality of recognition technology available to the masses is pretty awful.

Oh boy, the jokes write themselves!

It appears facial recognition is racist.

Chinese woman offered refund after facial recognition allows colleague to unlock iPhone X
A woman in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing has been offered a second refund after faulty facial recognition software on two iPhone X handsets allowed her colleague to unlock them.

The woman, identified only by her surname Yan, told the Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation that despite activating and configuring each phone’s facial recognition software, her work colleague was able to get into both devices on every attempt.
Yan said the first time it happened, she called the Apple hotline, but the staff would not believe her. Shen then went with her colleague to the nearest Apple store, where her colleague used facial recognition on the phone to demonstrate the issue to staff, according to the report.

The store said the camera might be faulty and gave Yan a refund. But the new iPhone X that she bought also had the same problem, prompting the shop to offer another refund, the report said. No details were given about whether the woman decided to purchase a third iPhone X.

Hahahahahahahaha

So what's the serious explanation of this?

Their facial recognition points (distance between eyes, bridge of nose, cheekbones, etc.) are similar and apple’s facial recognition criteria is far, far more loose than a law enforcement’s so that the phone unlocks quickly and doesn’t spend 10 seconds running a better and tighter algorithm

Basically, the Chinese lady’s friend was “close enough” for the iPhone to see it as the same person and unlock

is this an example of Asian Privilege? They are able to unlock and easily access other Asians iphones, no other race can do that, only Asians. This is solid proof that Asians are the most privileged race in America, while Whites, Blacks, and Hispanics are treated as second class citizens.

It's not just a joke, it's perception, and it's true in reverse.

Asians do get treated worse by colleges. I mean, either they appear to have a cultural bias towards discipline and hard work in education, which results in superior results, on average - or they are more intelligent. Their chances to get into the colleges of their choice is lower than that of their peers of other races. I don't buy the extracurricular activities explanation.

Well chances are this was just a freak occurence and they just DID look way too similar. But there were rumors the Face ID standards were lowered to meet production deadlines:

When the iPhone X was unveiled Apple claimed there was just a one in a million chance the Face ID technology would allow a random person into the phone, and that it had been trained to defend against silicon masks and other tricks. The company repeated the claim on Wednesday, saying the one in a million statistic was still true.

By contrast, the Touch ID fingerprint scanner on other iPhones has a one in 50,000 chance of approving somebody else's fingerprint.

A liberal corporation like Apple racist? Color me surprised. <Dana05>

Actually, the fingerprint scanner (at least on Android devices) provides security authentication for banking apps. So no, certainly not a gimmick when it is used to provide a physical security layer to protect your finances.

have you not noticed how the standard iPhone color is white and all the other colors are just treated as extras? #BE WOKE!

Apple are white supremacists. Thought this was common knowledge though.

Ok. This is kind of funny.
Tells you how well we can catch any Asian terrorist coming into America.

Facial structure similarity?

I've been knee deep in China for a long, long time, and can tell most East Asians apart as well as their region with a high, high degree of accuracy.

However, if you people watch in Hangzhou sometime, you will wave to someone you are -certain- is someone you know only to have a befuddled reaction from the stranger.

You'll find women and men who look absolutely identical in Zhejiang province.

In Guangdong I haven't experienced that phenomenon as much, but partly because Shenzhen is the ultimate immigrant city.

so a Chinese girl got a refund after her friend took a facial?

Seems like the kind of story that would have pictures.
