Araj's Training Log: Starting Strength and Jiu Jitsu

Well, looks like the forums ate part of my log :(.

Anyway I've been running SS again, and had some success in tournaments lately.

Won 2 matches at the NY Abu Dhabi pro trials, and won gold in nogi advanced and bronze in the absolute at Grappling Industries NY.

Squats 3x5 at 260
- Had horrible pain in my left elbow and shoulder after these, debilitating enough that though I gutted it out through my squats, I left without doing bench and deadlifts.

I think it's because I got kimura'd super hard a bunch of times Thursday night while rolling with a big brown belt I kept trying to over/under pass.

BJJ Friday night was good though. Hit a bunch of heel hooks in the nogi (technique was heel hook defense) and worked hard on my stiff-arm torreando pass and spider entry to x-guard in the gi class.
Murilo also emphasized guard retention, staying disciplined and keeping my knees in to my chest. I need to work on getting on my shoulders and getting my hips off the ground earlier when I invert to retain guard, as well as being more proactive and inverting earlier.

When working my spider entry to xguard, after the sweep I need to keep my elbow below my wrist to avoid the kimura when stuffing the hand and passing.

Murilo also told me to stop working on my arm triangle entry from sidemount and instead work on the stepover triangle from sidemount.

Lastly, I worked a little on the new thing I'm experimenting with where I put in the twister hook when the guard player defends the leg drag by inverting.

-DL 1x5 at 315 (used a belt and chalk because I did these right after squats (bench was busy) )

Mixed bag today.

Squats, 3x5 at 280 - felt fine but really had to focus on keeping chest up

OHP at 125- 5, 3 (2), 4
First set was fine but shaky. Second set, on rep 3 the bar started to move backward and I was worried it would fall and hurt my still injured shoulder. Shaken, I ended the set. Then I did the last 2 reps 30 seconds later.
Third set, I did 4 then the bar started to move backward so I stopped.

Powercleans, 5x3 at 115
Took no chances today due to hurt elbow and shoulder, but these felt fine once I got back into the groove.

Chinups- 7, 7, 7, 3

Missed lifting for a long time because I was sick and had exams and final projects and stuff. Graduating next week!

Thurs, 5/12
Squats 3x5 at 255
Bench 5x5 at 155 (trying to hit more volume to move my bench along)
DL 1x5 at 315
Chin ups 7, 7
