Anyone have an informed opinion about when you should get a dog spayed?

My dog will be 7 months and I had her scheduled to be spayed. My veterinarian said you should get it done before her first cycle. My sister says you should wait (something about growth plates and cancer risks). I'm getting all different answers online. Anyone in the know here?

Well my sister is repeating the advice of her vet. I'm going to get her spayed next month I was just wondering if anyone else could bring a case against it

It's so weird when female dogs do it. My sister's dog has done it on her when I was there on several occasions.
