I guess we will see how done he is, and if his career did in fact years ago...It's very true he has nothing left to prove for obvious reasons.
But lets address a few things here. His style was being just about the most well rounded fighter we've ever seen. I don't think I don't need to point out the obvious in that if there is one style that ages well? It's that one.
You don't think anyone believes he really has what it takes to become champ anymore? Ummmmmmm. The vast majority believe he's going to be the next MW champ. I will also say that if he's close to as good as he once was? He's more than likely going to beat Tyron....
So I'm having lots of trouble following your logic.
The truth is none of us know how good he's going to be. However there is a very real chance not only is he every bit as good as he once was, he could possibly be better than he was when he left....
GSP was already noticeably slower and took far more shots in his last few fights than he did his entire career.
Also, GSP being "well rounded" is not what I was referring to when I said his style doesn't hold up to age.
As a striker GSP relied on his explosive athleticism to dart in and out to hit without taking damage. He was not a striker who could stay relaxed in the pocket and trade. Other strikers like Roy Jones and Pernell Whitaker had a similar dropoff when they lost the speed and athleticism to do what they once did. As any real fight fan can tell you, speed and explosiveness are the first things to go as a fighter.
Likewise, his elite wrestling was absolutely dependent on explosive double legs. He was not a chain wrestler like Cormier or a tenacious clinch worker like Couture who could utilize their skills long into their careers. Given he was already noticeably slower against fighters like Shields and Hendricks I find it extremely unlikely he somehow regained his explosiveness to the level that he can be a champ in 2017.
And speaking of Hendricks he was essentially the poor man's Tyron, a wrestler/power puncher who used his grappling ability to avoid the ground. Given how much GSP struggled with Hendricks years ago I don't see how anyone can favor him against the younger, stronger, faster, more explosive Tyron.
I guess he will have the chance to make me eat my words and I will be glad if he does. But this looks like a money grab to me, not a desire to become the best in the world again.
