Honest question: I'm just wondering how you differentiate between "Check, mate." and "Checkmate". This must lead to some humorous situations I would imagine.

I was in France a couple of months ago.

It was full of french people.

You make a short pause between "check" and "mate", which is what the comma symbolises in writing.

Not that I'm australian.
