How?

Key to beating Cruz is touching your way in with light combinations and then throwing fast power combinations in the 2-3 seconds that you are in range. If we look at Cruz’s UFC opponents and who had the best game plan to beat him, it was without a doubt Demetrious Johnson. Johnson touched his way into range with light combinations, but only followed up with the same switch left high kick each time, assuming Cruz would lunge into it. Cruz recognized that pattern and realized that if he evaded that one fast power shot, he’d be out of danger. During the 2-3 seconds that you are in range, fast power combinations must be thrown to maximize the chances of a connection. Garbrandt has the speed and power such that even if one of the shots in the fast power combinations lands, Cruz will be in huge trouble. This is the only way to beat Cruz. Winning a decision can be thrown out of the window as Cruz is the ultimate point-fighter. Not everyone can utilize the game plan that is required to beat Cruz. You need speed, power, and takedown defence. If Cruz looks to shoot a takedown immediately following a light combination, the fighter must be able to stuff that takedown and immediately bring the fight back to the feet. Garbrandt has these necessary tools.

Why?

Cruz’s greatest ability will become the source of his downfall. Cruz looks to avoid every single shot his opponent throws. If a light combination to get in range is followed up by a fast power combination, Cruz’s mind will be overloaded. All of Cruz’s opponents have looked to land a single power shot without setting it up. Throwing one big right hand alone will not work. Cruz will evade that all day. However, if a four-punch light combination is used solely to get in range and then a four-punch fast power combination is thrown immediately after, the chances of a connection increase drastically. Having to do eight times as much work as you’re used to doing will throw anyone off, including Cruz. The gameplay expressed in this breakdown can effectively be used by Cody Garbrandt in order to defeat Dominick Cruz and win the UFC Bantamweight Championship. It’s just a matter of whether or not Garbrandt is analytically able to realize the effectiveness of this game plan and chooses to employ it during his fight with Cruz.

Thank you for reading.

Cruz wins.
Anything else is a major upset.

Cody has to get the KO or he won't win

This ain't a breakdown. It's just broken.

Cruz 50-45 but you make a good point that Cody has a skillset that MIGHT prove actually effective against Dom. Hard to believe till I see it though.

Do you really believe this or are you just making a wild guess so you look smart as fuck if it actually happens?

If Cody doesn't get the KO in the first round, he loses the steam in his right and is tapped up for 4 rounds by Cruz. Pretty plain and simple.

Let me remark that it is pretty bold of you to say that this will work and the only question is whether Garbrandt is able to independently develop your game plan.

Cruz has only lost once and it was by RNC ... so apparently that's the way to beat him.

I think Silly Dilly could beat him in a rematch, I think he couldve beaten him in the first fight had he thrown a lot more leg kicks

Dillashaws problem is he becomes a lot more stationary in the later rounds and Cruz just doesn't

Compare TJ's movement in the first round to in the third or fourth, it changes a fair bit (to be expected really) but Cruz's just doesn't

Neck Tatt is too stuck in the mud for Cruz to beat.

Easy 50-45 for the Decisionator.

You need a very good low kick game to beat Cruz. A guy like Aldo is the worst matchup for Cruz. Takeout his legs and Cruz cant dance around then. TJ was kinda doing that but stopped doing it in the fight idk why.

I see where you were headed with that analysis. Keep in mind that touching your way in and landing power shots on the inside is a huge task when you're trying to hit the hardest moving target in MMA. If hypothetically, Cody tries to touch his way in, what makes you think Cruz is just gonna stay in the one spot for the follow up power combination? Cruz is usually moving laterally or darting off line by the time that opportunity comes. IMO Cody's big focus should be on cutting the cage, hitting the body and legs and stopping the knee tap TD Cruz uses so well.
