Here's a little preview write up I did on this season and the top teams:

Here are some guys that are the top guys. Doing these using rankings + past results. AA means All-American at NCAA tournament. If only ranking listed, did not AA but are highly ranked. I used Flowrestling's rankings. Not saying they are the best, just the ones that I am looking at:

Minnesota:
Dardanes (133, 2X AA), Dardanes (141, AA), Ness (157, 2X NCAA Finalist), Storley (174, 2X AA), Schiller (197, 2X AA, #2 ranked).

Iowa:
Gilman (125, top 10 ranked, JR World Bronze Medalist in Freestyle), Clark (133, AA), Dziewa (141, top 10 ranked), Moore (165 top 10 ranked), Evans (174, 2X AA top 5 ranked), Burak (197, AA), Telford (HWT, 2X AA).

Ohio State:
Tomasello (125, top 15 ranked), DiJulius (133, top 10 ranked), Stieber (141, 3X NCAA Champion), Stieber (149, 2X AA, top 3 ranked), Demas (157, top 10 ranked), Jordan (165, top 15 ranked), Courts (184, top 10 ranked), Snyder (197, 2013 JR World champ, 2014 JR World Bronze freestyle)

Penn State:
Conaway (125, top 15 ranked), Gulibon (133, top 10 ranked), Brown (174, NCAA Finalist, #3 ranked), McIntosh (197, AA, #3 ranked).
*note* Megaludis (125, 2X NCAA Finalist), Retherford (141, AA, top 3 ranked), and all big Freshman redshirting

Other wrestlers to watch (By weight):

125: Delgado (Illinois, 2X NCAA Champ), Waters (Missouri, AA, #3 ranked ).
133: AJ Schopp: (Edinboro, AA #1 ranked, AA), Beckman (Lehigh, AA, #2 ranked).
141: Mitchell Port (Edinboro, NCAA Finalist, #2 ranked), Stephen Dutton (Michigan, AA, #5 ranked).
149: Jason Tsirtsis (Northwestern, NCAA Champ, #1 ranked), Devin Carter (Virginia Tech, NCAA Finalist, top 5 ranked).
157: James Green (Nebraska, AA, #2 ranked), Ian Miller (Kent State, AA, #3 ranked, Exciting as shit).
165: Alex Dieringer (Oklahoma State, NCAA Champ at 157, #1 ranked), Nick Sulzer (Virginia, AA, #2 ranked).
174: Robert Kokesh (Nebraska, AA, #2 ranked), Wilps (Pittsburgh, AA, #5 ranked).
184: Jack Dechow (Old Dominion, AA, #2 ranked), Lorenzo Thomas (Penn, AA, #5 ranked).
197: J'Den Cox (Missouri, NCAA champ, #1 ranked), Kyven Gadsen (Iowa State, AA, #3 ranked).
HWT: Nick Gwiazdowski (N.C. State, NCAA Champ, #1 ranked), Adam C00n (Michigan, JR World Bronze Medalist in Freestyle AND Greco).

Enjoy, wish I had more time to make it more thorough.

Discuss

I'm lobbying for a sticky, but haven't gotten a response from the mods. It will keep the discussion on the first page, which it rarely was last season. Would love a response mods! Thanks.

Thanks for starting a thread again. I learned a lot last year.

Flo starting to put out their rankings. 141 looks so weak this year.

Yeah I can’t believe Gullibon is ranked #1. It looked WIDE open.

If tOSU's freshman preform the way a lot of people think/want/hope they will that team will be tough to beat. Minnesota and Iowa are stacked too.

Cornell has the firepower to win this year but there are a couple questions that need to be answered first. Can realbuto come back full strength from the knee surgery, can palacio hold 157 and can Cisneros hold 141. If all three of those answers are "yes" I think they could make a run. In my opinion 2016 is the year Cornell finally gets a title.

I'm really looking forward to finally seeing gilman and Clark in the line up together. I'm also really looking forward to 157 this season. The weight class is going to be really fun. Lots of explosive and funky guys.

If Jimmy transitions well and adjusts to the weight, he could take it. It's very open and there are no real stand outs. My fear is his size. He struggled his freshman year going up to 133. Last year, he looked like he put on some muscle and was a good sized 133er. Going up again has me worried.

Top 3 guys all graduated and Heil and Jack had better than expected tournaments kind of helped Flow put Gulibon at number 1. I think they mention something about in the podcast. But yeah I don't think there is a real clear front runner at this weight.

Penn st. individual rankings so far:
125- #2
133- #11
141-#1
149-#2

Their looking like a pretty scary team this upcoming season.

I think it's safe to say Kyle Snyder will AA. Tomasello has a high ceiling as well, we will just have to see.

I'm rather excited for 141 this year.... Friend of mines boy is wrestling 141 for the University of Maryland.

Sweet picture 11 floors up of Kent State outdoor wrestling practice:

I'd like to see Ashnault take it at 141. Think he's got a pretty good shot.

So who are the top wrestlers from each of the top schools? Wrestling is an individual sport, so it is the individuals who matter.

Penn State and OK State are a cut above everyone else. If the Penn State RS Freshman (Nolf, Nickal) are as good as people think, no one is touching them imo.

Even without Snyder, I still think Ohio State will be better than OK State

What about Megaludis? Conway won't be starting this year unless Mega is hurt or redshirting (I haven't heard that).

Ya, I did some research and it appears he is as well, not 100% but looking that way. It looks like all 3 of Penn States big incoming recruits are going to redshirt (Nolf, Nickal, and Nevills). I am not terribly optimistic for this season but next is going to be interesting.

Is he redshirting to give Conaway a go at his natural weight of 125/to put the eggs in next year's basket? Possibly something else? I haven't seen a reason.

I think it's a combination of giving Conaway a chance and to prepare for next year. Delgado will be gone so he'll only have to worry about Nashon. It's crazy to think that Nico could very well place in the top 3 all 4 years and never win a title.

So Brock Gutches (3 time NAIA champ, potential 4 timer) stepped in for Tyler Wilps at the NWCA All-Star Classic and he is wrestling Kokesh of Nebraska. Pretty excited for that match. All the matchups are really good, great way to kick things off.

That will be interesting. It will help show how big the talent gap actually is if it's there at all at the top level. Two guys from my area were D1 washouts who went on to both be multiple time D3 champions.

EDIT: Kemmerer was D2, Morgan was D3.

Kokesh beat Gutches in the Reno TOC finals last season 3-1, so it should be a closely contested match. Kokesh is a 2X AA, with 3rd and 4th place finishes, so he's a little underrated if you ask me. If Gutches could win, that would be a big statement win for him. Wonder if he is going to go into greco after college. I am pretty sure Holt personally trained Gutches when he was younger, and Holt was a greco wrestler.

Forgive a noob, but what is a red shirt? returning champ?
does All American mean you won the division?

Is there anywhere free to watch the matches? I doubt it will be on tv in New Zealand!

red shirt = took a year off last year
red shirt freshman = 1st year of competition, took a year off 1st year in school
red shirt sophomore, etc = took a redshirt at some point
true freshman, sophomore, etc = no redshirt years

all-american = top 8 at your weight class

www.flowrestling.org is your best bet, then youtube
