Virginia and Maryland are in limbo. They're the northernmost southern states with northern properties/politics. Also, I don't think you can find fried okra at a gas station in either state.

Huh, I didn’t know that. I figured the cutoff for “the south” would be like the northern borders of South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi etc. Had no idea somewhere as far north as Maryland would be “the South”.

Virginia was part of the CSA and the capital was in Richmond.

Never seen boiled peanuts in a gas station in VA or MD. Fried gizzards, too.
