With the recent capture of the Golden State Killer, it's time to turn our focus on one of the most interesting serial killer cases in modern history - The Zodiac Killer.

From the late 1960s until the early 1970s, Zodiac terrorized the state of California, taunted law enforcement with letters and cryptic ciphers - He was never caught. He has claimed up to 37 victims with 5 confirmed.

There have been a number of suspects over the years but no one has been firmly pinned down. Due to the breakthrough in the GSK case, all Zodiac evidence has been re-submitted for DNA testing so it should be an interesting couple of months.

The thread will contain theories, suspects and further updates as the case progresses. Feel free to share your stories, persons of interest, cipher solutions and more.

A must-see documentary on the Zodiac Killler. Includes the officers that were there, eyewitnesses and surviving victims:

The first letter/cipher sent to the police department. It was quickly cracked by a school teacher and his wife. They figured that the word "kill" would be found somewhere in the cipher and once the discovered that, it was cracked.

The cipher:

The solution:

The infamous 340 cipher. Considered one of the holy grails in cryptology. Unbroken after almost 50 years. Some believe it is gibberish and contains no message. Zodiac claimed that in the cipher, it will reveal his name. Many have claimed to have cracked it over the years but the community hasn't accepted any of the solutions.

Most recently, Craig Baurer of Princeton University claims to have solved part of the cipher. To me, it sounds like the most Zodiac-like in tone. It reads:

Here it is: I kill both night and day.
I live by the gun barel aim.
So quit wishing for game to be over pigis.
Ma wrist ni locks ?
Now angry dangerous I wont change any of game.

After these lines, there is gibberish or unbroken code, followed by the name:

Richard Nixon

It definitely sounds like something Zodiac would write to taunt the police.

The first time I heard the name sifo dyas I thought they said cypher Diaz.

I feel like there's a connection there.

I thought that prison guard from Face Off did it.

Bumping this poorly participated thread with some big news:

The 340 Cipher has been solved - for real this time:

I HOPE YOU ARE HAVING LOTS OF FUN IN TRYING TO CATCH ME
THAT WASNT ME ON THE TV SHOW
WHICH BRINGS UP A POINT ABOUT ME
I AM NOT AFRAID OF THE GAS CHAMBER
BECAUSE IT WILL SEND ME TO PARADICE ALL THE SOONER
BECAUSE I NOW HAVE ENOUGH SLAVES TO WORK FOR ME
WHERE EVERYONE ELSE HAS NOTHING WHEN THEY REACH PARADICE
SO THEY ARE AFRAID OF DEATH
I AM NOT AFRAID BECAUSE I KNOW THAT MY NEW LIFE IS
LIFE WILL BE AN EASY ONE IN PARADICE DEATH

It didn't contain his name like he promised but still amazing it was finally cracked.

It could still contain his name in a crossword kind of way to where you would actually have to know who it is to find it, but he said his name would be in the first one he sent that was solved pretty quickly and there was no name( unless it is Paradice as mentioned above)

I know Tom Voigt thought he found the name of his pet suspect Richard Giakowski in the first cipher where unused letters spelled out G Y K E which was supposedly a nickname but I don’t know if he’s still pushing him as a suspect.

cool to get some real news on this though. I remember every year after the movie somebody would pop up with a case the built against a family member or somebody they know. It’s been very quiet for a few years now.

I was just reading about the cipher being cracked.

I think with dna evidence and whatnot, we will find out who he was sooner or later. It will probably come from those ancestry websites where you submit a dna sample.

Wasn't dumb enough to put his name in the puzzle like BTK was.

Unless you're one of those who think BTK was zodiac.

Wasn’t BTK egged on by the cops who said he was dead and this and that... Dude sent out a floppy disk with his name attached to the file without him knowing it. What an idiot. Lol!

Not sure on that but that's funny if it's true.
