Hey guys,

Just want to pick your brains about your personal favourite ways of breaking someones full guard.

While drilling in class yesterday....I have short ass legs..The old "drive the elbow in the quad worked on me and its killing" Now the question for this is I think the guy knew the perfect place for it to soften up the muscle (directly on top of the quad wasnt bad but almost on the side of it killed and opened my guard instantly.

The stand up and push off also seems to work effiecently as well.

Any other tips and secrets you guys use to either pass or keep guard?

Thanks

I've got short legs also, and when a bigger opponent gets that elbow in the femoral nerve thing going it hurts. I think a lot of guys with more bjj experience than me are going to tell you that the elbow in the quad pass sets the guy up for submissions.
I usually just switch to an open guard, maybe something generally like this:

There's some good stuff there. Go there, read, look at pictures.

Opening the guard with the elbow in the quad is a timeless opener. But make sure you have good posture otherwise you just wasted your energy opening that guard and allowing the guy on the bottom to set you up.

if someone puts their arms back enough to drive their elbows into my thighs, i sit up into them since they are leaving me open to do so. i underhook their arms or grab around the back of the arms, and break their posture down. from there it's a lot of fun, you can work to take their back, kimuras, triangles to kimuras.

as far as guard breakers, i go for any of the ones where you keep them flat and work to break their legs open. as i am moving to go for these i will also pay attention to if they open their guard to reposition or begin a submission and jump on the that opening like a hobo on a ham sandwich.

Thanks for the tips guy (the ones with real responses and not post whoring idiots).

I like the open guard technique as well as sitting up and using underhooks. Thanks again for your input

Get rid of that fucken elbow on the quad shit. Seriously its worthless. If its working on you then you either A) Are very sensitive B) Just started training or C) Since you think its a good way of breaking the guard your already mentally beaten into thinking that its meant to work.

Here read this... find my post and read others opinions on it, it works.

Now quit using your elbows to break a guard, and if someone is doing it to you dont open, force yourself to ignore the pain for about a month, you wont feel anything on your legs after.

hahah i got called a posting whore, by some guy that joined the same time as me and has wayyyyyyy many more post than me..... DON'T BE MADE BECAUSE YOUR HAVING PROBLEM WITH GUARD!!!! ahahahaha

I usually take what they give me and work with it. I don't have like an actual top 3 of anything.

Punch until they open the guard.
Can Opener.
Bait a triangle or leg lock.

Nah, just being a fool I fkn hate those ^types of replies because they are sto stupid. The elbow in the quad does work but I try to use that as a last resort because experienced guys will let you try pressure all day & take advantage of your posture.

I like to control one hand, stand & pass on the opposite side.

I also have short legs so keeping full guard is hard for me. I think the key is SPACE you either want zero space holding the guy on you or you wants lots of space. If your in the middle ground thats where the guy on top has time to work. There comes a point where you know he is about to break your guard thats when i start to create lots of space so i can either stand up or suck him back in.

it helps when you make fun of someone, if you use the correct words while doing so. as in it's "mad" not "made". good luck with that in the future.

absolutly nothing works for me except this move...you fake being tiried and lie on his chest, with your arm on his opposite shoulder. you are basically giving him the setup for an armbar. atnicipating this, the second he opens his legs to go for it you quickly posture up and scoop at the same time.

Yea, but when he's in middle ground is when you have the best opportunity to go for a triangle/armbar

1. knee-in-butt
2. stand up and push away if he will try and sweep and I will try to counter that (safer than armbar bait)
3. sit straight up and stall... :D

If you have nothing to add to the discussion but immature bullshit, you should honestly GTFO and get back into bareknuckle. Posts like yours water this section down.

The elbow in thigh and knee in butt are both good ways to get swept/submitted. Saulo has a good version of the knee in butt that involves posting and circling your leg, but it may not work too good on guys with long legs.

Honestly the only one I really ever go for is the standing pass. It's the hardest to get good at, but it works the best, in my opinion.
