do you have a personal blacklist where you refuse to roll with certain people for whatever reason? like maybe because he/she always hurts seems to injure everybody. or maybe they stink or have perennial bad breath.

tell me about your list and the reason(s) they are blacklisted

xPharaoh is top on my list, because he never brings coleslaw to the school BBQ.

That douche.

Nope. Everybody, good or bad, has a different game that tests me in different ways.

i try not to black list anyone because i feel it is important to roll with every bpdy tpe, but there this one 16 year old kid who always tries to injure people, and somehow i always end up rolling with him.

He'll do shoulder pressure and dig his shoulder into my nose or i'll be in side control and he'll wrap his arms around the back of my head and squeeze my face . pretty much uses everything except technique.

And he rolls live like if he were in the Pan Ams ...very annoying

ive posted this before in my asshole jiujitsu thread.

my example is one person at my bjj school, who i'll call "fred", is a blue belt and he's generally just a real abrasive and seems like he's trying to be an overt asshole. (im a whitebelt and have been training for around 2 years). this guy is 220 and im 245. ive only rolled with him 2-3 times in 3 months. im new to this gym in this time and that may be the reason but all of the others are very receptive and helpful, complimenting me on technique and relative ease at picking stuff up. he just acts like a tool and had a fit when i tapped him the first time we rolled. he tapped me initially with a tight armbar when i put myself in a bad position. i complimented him and he said "well i AM a blue belt." i laughed it off and came right back and tapped him and whinecrybitch mode ensued and he threw in the weight difference too. this guy asked me to roll. our instructor then pulled him aside and privately had a big boy talk. he was fine for about an hour then left. just curious how you guys deal with this as im sure all schools have at least 1 of these guys.

my school has hundreds of students and there is only one guy i wont roll with. He injured me once doing a kneebar (we dont train leglocks at white belt obv) and i was out for a month. I rolled with him again when i got back and got my lip split and a black eye and he went for a heel hook saying "its not a leg lock, its a foot lock"..... that was the end of me rolling with him.

I havent seen him in a couple months anyways.

Punch him in the face and tell him it's not a punch it's a facelock.

Meh, been injured by pretty much every person but I don't hold any grudge. I like each and every one at my gym as without them I wouldn't be able to develop. The coaches means a lot but not nearly as much as the people who lets you roll with them, they are the real key to your development.

Even I who am quite tangled up with my thoughts at the gym hence I manage to say retarded shit every now and then is treated nicely by everybody. I tend to ask a lot of questions after each roll to understand if I had improved anything/became worse at anything etc, also give the same talk to my rolling partners. Of course I don't say they've turned worse or anything unless they say they are trying something new, then I tell them it isn't quite there yet if it isn't. Try to help them get it there.

I think they realize I care for their development as well and our common goal means we have a mutual respect for eachother. Hence noone is blacklisted, because they are nice people.

Injuries happen.

Unfortunately, when a person gets injured, they interpret the situation as, somehow, their opponent's fault.

Not saying it isn't, but that's irrelevant.

No, I don't blacklist anybody. I will roll with anybody, and I'll compete against anybody.

I think what surprises me the most is that I'm replying to a silverD thread that isn't about coleslaw.

even if the other person you are rolling with is intentionally trying to rip your arm off? Or if they do shit that is intentional?

I quite clearly noted that it could occur like you mentioned, but as possible as it is, it's also very rare.

Most injuries - the vast majority of injuries - are accidental, and I believe that a lot of these people who intentionally want to "rip your arm off" aren't actually trying to rip your arm off, but rather train with more aggression and more intensity than you'd like.

I have never trained with a person that has intentionally tried to injure others. I have trained with people who apply submissions quickly, and people who are generally just less pleasant to roll with than others, both of which can be easily be solved by tapping early and often, but never someone whose sole intent is to injure you.

So unless that is the very rare case, no. I wouldn't blacklist someone like that.

I put a guy on The List because the logo of his Vitamins & Minerals rashguard kept rubbing off on me. It was ridiculous. Everyone would end up with little bits of Vitamins & Minerals all over their stuff. Eventually there was nothing on his rashguard except the "&" symbol.

I dunno why, but this made me completely lose it.

A lovely guy that felt he didn't get enough momentum from a spinning sweep so he decided to start off with the tornado kick momentum builder and throw himself, heel first in a spinning heel kick that landed on my knee.

Fractured my knee and dislodged a bone chip that is still floating around now 8 years after, too small for the doctor to want to dig it out.

If I could walk properly after it happened I would have caught the bastard with the steel training sword we sometimes use.

A true spaz, one of those puffing, wheezing types and he had a habit of making huge inhales then go on the offensive on the striking techniques holding his breath to fire off as much as he managed until he got dizzy.
He never really understood that such obvious breathing pattern is quite detrimental, loved to drop him as he inhaled with a hard left to his body/liver.

Last I heard he wanted to be in the UFC but after having lost all his comps he focused on a girl he found instead. Asshole.

I had a major surgery on my shoulder. I didn't have much strength in them at first, and I still am just under 10 lbs. My neck was recently sprained as well. I literally couldn't roll with certain people without risking injury:
  • Some people were too big at first. Gradually I'm able to relax that, but I still can't risk doing absolute divisions.
  • Others went too hard or used too much strength. Some people couldn't control their pace. Some cranked submissions quickly... even on my injured body parts.
  • Some people couldn't control their own bodies. They accidentally throw elbows or knees a lot. I don't mind MMA, but still it's annoying when I'm fighting other injuries.
When I'm healthy, I don't blacklist anyone who is safe for me to roll with. I have to be more discriminating when I'm hurt, especially for those who don't understand the extend of my injury (or maybe they do but don't care).

And some people black-listed me! They told me that they didn't feel comfortable training with me, since I was part of another team. That attitude really disappointed me every time I see it. Thankfully I see it changing sometimes. I try to be the best training partner I can be to anyone who will train with me. I just ask that they give their best as well.

I have a training partner who is exactly the same, a kid around 17-18.

It's frustrating but I try and talk to him after rolls about the importance of technique over mindless aggression in training.

I try and show some empathy because he's just a kid who is trying to get better but has yet to learn to tone his ego and pride down a few notches to improve.

When we roll though, I submit him as quickly as possible. We both might miss out on learning, but I'd rather not get injured by giving him too much leeway. That way I can move on to other people who are much smoother and better to learn from.

Just my .02

Some people never learn. The neighbor kid, growing up never could wrap his head around gun safety. When we would shoot BB guns, he never understood that you should NEVER point your weapon at a person, under any circumstances. No matter how many times we told him, he never got it. Lot of people like him in the world.

I roll with anyone. We have some guys that go real hard but I just tap early and often. No big deal.

there is one guy i refuse to roll with and its because he stinks like an armpit in the desert. i shouldnt be on the verge of puking due to BO.

aside from that i train with a good group of guys.

been neck cranked by a few random people at open mat. i don't avoid rolling with them, just restart and go after it like it's a tournament.

had a couple white belts try to foot lock or kneebar me, again typically at open mat, the first time they get a warning, the 2nd time again, restart and go after it like it's a tournament.

the only time i avoid rolling with anyone is heavyweight/220 or so and up, if i'm having problems with my knee.
