I got an e-mail about this... why read the book when you can just practice and roll at your gym.

You should do both.
It's the same as school, instead of going out and inventing the wheel again, you read in a book how someone else did it. You practice your stuff as much as possible, but everyone has down time.
So ya read how to improve. It can't hurt. I mean it may not be as fun as flaming..
