When you first started out grappling, what do you feel was your biggest weakness? I'm sure it probably varies depending on your size, strength, stamina, etc.

I'm about 5'10.5" and 180 but very weak for my weight. I have trouble keeping people in my guard and passing guard. I just started in mid-January, and I've noticed a lot of improvement since then, but not with keeping or passing guard.

Anyone else have this problem, or was it something else that seemed to be your biggest challenge when first starting out?

I'd have to say sweeps. I really don't implement them in my game as much as I should, and when I do they usually fail. I reverse more positions based on feeling my opponents movement and timing, like when they are off balance or don't have anything to post with.

I sometimes have problems holding down a solid side control. For some reason, I am MUCH better at holding and attacking from the mount.

I had that problem and I know your frustration.
You have to strengthen you thighs and toughen them up. or at least that's what I needed to do. Also practice hip movement. Try practicing drills with a partner.
On the otherside, for escaping a guard practice technique, technique, technique until your smooth and fast.

Being too defensive, especially when I had someone in my guard.....worrying too much about opening up my guard, and keeping it closed, until it was too late, and then scrambling to avoid a bad position. I have really been focusing on working my open guard a lot lately, and it has opened up my game tremendously.

see when is started out i had a couple problems. the first was lack of stamina i would attack hard and fast and gass and not finish then be in survival. they next was i had good strenght for my size ( altho only on the matts when i have adrenaline running, it gave me an extra burst of strenght) how ever my grip strenght wasnt good, i wouldnt be able to hold on to some things. now my problem is thinking if i start to think then i get beaten but if i go on instinct and jsut act i usually do better.

+1 My first instinct when I have someone in guard is to slow down and formulate a gameplan. That causes me to be too defensive when I could be more aggressive and set up my sweep or submission from my opponents mistake.
