"The 18-year-old prodigy won the $2.5 million battle, sealing a 7.5-6.5 victory in a dramatic Game 14 of classical chess...

“It’s fitting that the match goes to the last game, because we’ve both showed a lot of fighting spirit and played some very entertaining chess,” Gukesh said at a post-match news conference.

But analysts said China's Ding made a crucial blunder in the deciding Game 14 that ultimately handed the teen the title."

Russians notably absent.
Carlsen is still the GOAT but will need to come back to try to reclaim title.

18?

He's only 18? I'm only very periodically and briefly into chess and feel like I've seen this mofo some time now lol. Well, I guess he's been a prodigy since lik 4 so it makes sense

Was a strange event, I play all the time from work and whatnot -- royally suck with an ELO around 1800, but whatever.

Ding (China) literally made a novice mistake in the final game and handed the tournament to Gukesh (India) in game 14 of 14 when they were all tied up. Seriously, watch some of the recaps, people were like... WTF.... I say "novice" -- but its really both complicated and extremely NOT complicated. 3 on 2 pawns, a rook each, and bishops of the same color = known draw. Ding executed it like garbage by stickin his bishop in the corner and only accessing 1 diagonal -- and Gukesh basically lost his mind (in chess terms) when he saw the fuck up.

Also, Magnus is GOAT lol, ain't even a question when it comes to who CHESS GOAT is.

Curry farts are no laughing matter.

Ding has been a head case all year, nerves, and shaky as fuck -- solid performance from Gukesh -- takes a lot of prep work and a good team to win the world classical -- but there's also a reason Mr. Carlsen has said the format is pretty crap these days...

Ding is like 32 and Gukesh is 18, but Gukesh actually looks older lol.

I like chess. Got into for a while I was in college after I asked my organic chemistry professor for help on a synthesis. He said I should take up chess to learn how to see several steps ahead. I think he was kidding, but I got into it anyway and played over 1000 games on online. Got pretty decent at it. Wouldn’t want it to be my profession though.

I really like chess, but's just memorization and pattern recognition. It's not the be all and end all of intellectualism like some people make it out to be. Some of the top players are really a bunch of dopes. Vladimir Kramnik especially, and he's a former world champion, who beat Kasparov. Saw Kramnik just got banned from Chess.com for 6 months again ahaha.

I can see that. Pattern recognition took me pretty far in chess before I ever read about openings, mid game, and end game strategies

Yeah, just using the tactics trainer/puzzles can give you some solid newb gains, without worrying too much about any opening theory.

Comical and anti climatic ending to the Championship. Either it was intentional or simply exhaustion, because there is no other way any GM would make such a blunder. The level of the games were atrocious.

Carlsen, Caruana, Nakamura, Nepo >> these two kids
