So i got a letter from rogers saying i have been downloading unauthorized content and threatening a fine. Probably when i used torrent to download the new avengers movie and left it seeding when i fell asleep.

Anyone else had this happen to them? And dont bother lecturing me on stealing movies etc lol

I realize that it was most definitely the movie company who tracked my ip on torrent and sent a letter to my isp which in turn sent a letter to me.

Ive setup a vpn now that will change my ip every 45 minutes.

Do you think its still possible for them to track me through the vpn? Or possibly threaten the vpn company to give my real ip to them?

I wouldn't think so but just wondering. Im going to take more precautionary measures just to ensure it doesn't happen again. Im going to avoid torrent unless i absolutely have to, and ill stick to direct link downloads when u can.

If it's a VPN then what is the point in changing the IP every 45 mins? Either it hides you or it doesn't.

Can they track you? Probably not if it's implemented perfectly. You need to bind the torrent app to the VPN route or alter your routing tables or firewall to ensure that when the VPN drops, it doesn't default to your normal connection. You also need to look into DNS leaks which enable your ISP to somewhat monitor what you're up to.

I think I'd change ISP before I did any more torrenting now they have you under scrutiny.

Yeah sounds like your VPN isn't doing the trick.

Anyway, you get three strikes don't you? I wouldn't sweat it. Whatever you do don't pay anybody any shakedown money.

Many years ago I got a letter from the WWF/Silvervision because they found out I was copying their tapes and selling them on.
I had a website for it and was charging

Just get yourself an android tv box with the kodi app. Stream the latest movies instead of downloading them.

    LOL.

Steals content. Gets called on it by internet provider and warned to stop. Gets upset. Is normal.

Cat burglar 1: Man, this house is tough to steal from, this is taking forever.
Cat burglar 2: It's because these pesky deadbolts and locks, Jim.
Cat burglar 1: Wow, the nerve of some people! These home invasions are too much work, I'm going back to stealing copyrighted content off the internet. That way I'm anonymous so it makes me feel like it's a victim less crime. Also, they're already rich, they don't need my money.

Yeah it changing your IP address every 45 minutes doesn't do a whole lot. You need one that will encrypt your traffic. Private Internet Access is a good one that does that, they don't keep logs; they also have options so there's no DNS leaks and that if the VPN goes out, your internet access goes out on that PC so you're always protected.

    Also, disable seeding.
