that's what media members and journalists have to realize. UFC doesn't want media coverage, they want media member who they don't have to pay to promote for the UFC independently at no cost to them. If you want to conduct journalism, you chose the wrong sport

I already said here, you should have 0 connection with Zuffa to be able to do real journalism.

That's not how the media and journalism work

This makes the UFC look more like "sports entertainment" than a real sport promotion.

Ariel is more of a MMA busybody than a journalist.

Even that angle doesn't make sense though, because Ariel absolutely WAS promoting the UFC by breaking that news.

When he says Conor/Diaz II is on and Brock is back, I as a potential customer get excited. The UFC is being petty & absurd here.

I completely agree, the only reason UFC has problem with it is beause they are absolute control freaks. Ariel writing about the story actually builds hype for the eventual reveal, Dana is just an ego maniac

the point of my thread was that UFC is absurd with its media policy

I dont fault them for wanting to establish the precedent that big fight announcements get broke on their air for their paying customers to see first. Its a value add they want for the people that pay for their product and there is nothing wrong with them wanting that angle.

If the reason he got escorted out and banned for life is really because he broke the Brock story then I find what the UFC did to be unconstitutional. As a member of the press he has a first amendment right to break that story.

I think this is the first time I've ever disagreed with you Petey lol.

Ariel didn't break the news to be a good reporter, or to give information to the fans; he broke the news for site traffic, and he got it. However, that was site traffic that belonged to the UFC, and he stole it from them. The UFC doesn't have any ethical responsibility to help Ariel cover the sport, and if they don't feel like what a reporter is doing is helping the UFC, they have no reason to provide them with press credentials or allow them access to their shows. Maybe they over-reacted here, but I don't really have any issue with it.

ok and if u are gonna report like a fucking paparazzi then u are gonna get treated like one

They didn't deny him of that right. They are simply not helping him accomplish this in the future. They have no legal or ethical obligation to do so

certainly they have hte right to withhold press credentials if they don't like the storeis the reporter is writing

but legitimate sports organizations don't do that

no one is arguing that Zuffa doesn't have the right to do it. it's just bush league and small time shit that one wouldn't expect from a sports organization.

If you don't think its unethical to punish a journalist for reporting stone cold truthful facts, then you my friend belong in North Korea.

I'm sort of on the fence here. obv its ridiculous that they escorted Ariel out etc in such dramatic fashion. Obviously he's the best connected MMA journalist and there is a mole somewhere in the UFC feeding him these scoops. At the same time, I cant help but feeling that scooping 2 big announcements the evening of a huge card when they're going to make them, is sort of a dick move on ariels part. He seems to be going out of his way to piss off dana and gang, which i can appreciate at some level, but seems pretty misguided as far as he's not really covering MMA, he's covering the UFC. Few tidbits about other orgs, but his bread and butter is UFC.
And scooping announcements the night of a big event, releasing the info with the event in progress is kind of a dick move. just my opinion. Dude is gonna end up buried in the desert at some point.

"If you promote MMA then your not a fan of the UFC" - Dana

I can't tell if you are trolling or not.

Zuffa doesn't have to give him free passes to their events and backstage press access. They can chose whomever they want to credential, its a privilege they assign. Ariel can enjoy free speech in his office, home, public space etc. He doesn't have any right to free UFC tickets and specialized access to their backstage.

>>> This is all beside the point though. If Ariel posted a thoughtful, well researched article that was critical of Zuffa, and they responded by banning him - then people should be up in arms.

If you are a tabloid style personality who is using special access to beat Zuffa to the punch on big announcements using your twitter, you are going to lose your privileged access.

There is nothing wrong with Ariel being a insider tabloid tweeter and there is nothing wrong with Zuffa saying they won't give him free tickets anymore.

Taking away the free ticket that you gave someone isn't really a punishment.
