Is the most stupid thing I have heard. Period. It makes my blood boil, and no; not because I am a fanboy or something.

All the blood, sweat and tears they have to go through to first of all GET IN the UFC.

After that working their way up at the top 10, getting a title shot and WIN it. BEAT the champ, that MAKES you the champ right?

Throughout that road they get ups and mostly downs, family problems, injuries, losses, etc. and when they finally get there people come up with those bullshit statements.

How disrespectful can you be saying that?

It's just a saying, chill out.
It's not like a rule or something.

I think its a good thing to say. just about anybody can get the belt as long as they are given a titleshot. Keeping the belt while defending it time and time again, is what make a fighter a true champ.

Agreed. Its just a saying though.

Its just saying that those who defend obviously have earned extra credibility.

You are not the champ until you defend the belt at least one time

Take a deep breath the fighters get paid like a champ and that's all that matters!

Maybe he's a butthurt Frank Mir fan.

It's just a saying, like "You gotta beat the champ to become the champ". It doesn't(or shouldn't) have any practical application.

No, JDS indeed defended it, and I am no Weidman fan.

Just think it's really disrespectful.

I am a fighter myself (not pro yet), and it irritates me how people talk about fighters. How they should fight, and be tougher, etc. They wanna see them ''bang'' and downgrade their long road becoming a champ.

It's just really disrespectful to talk like that behind a keyboard. I love Anderson, and I don't like Weidman that much, but he beat Anderson fair and square and is a true champ. He walked the walk that night and KO'd the champ, which makes him the champ.

If he defends it this saturday or not doesn't change anything.

Again, I am NO Weidman-fan.

I think that saying is bullshit too. Just getting to the point where you are given a chance to challenge for a championship belt and then most importantly winning that crucial fight with pressure on the line is all it takes to be the champion. You're in the proverbial history books forever. You're a former champion for the rest of your life even after you retire.

It doesn't matter to me whether that champion loses that belt a few months later and never accomplished anything ever again. Once you climb Mt. Everest and plant your flag no one can ever take that way from you, especially since so many other talented guys never pulled it off.

This cannot be said enough.

It doesn't make much sense but at least it doesn't really have a bearing on the fight. The belief that you have to beat the champ by a wide margin to get the win as if the champ starts the fight with some extra brownie points is far more stupid and has an actual influence on who some people think won a title fight.

In a world where all title challenger are legitimate this would be a non-issue. Unfortunately we live in a world where Chael Sonnen gets title a title shot at the above division coming off a loss
